Pentagon told Congress Iran war cost $43.6 billion; Democrats demand open books

The latest official figure we could confirm puts the Iran war at $43.6 billion as of Sept. 3, and Senate Democrats say the real cost is being hidden. The bill lands seven days before the Nov. 3 midterms, with voters already angry about prices.

U.S. Central Command has told Congress the Iran war had cost $43.6 billion as of Sept. 3. That is the highest official estimate so far, according to a Pentagon document given to Congress and viewed by CQ Roll Call 1. Reports of a still-higher total are circulating, but we could not confirm a newer number from a source we can cite, so this brief uses the figure we could verify.

The $43.6 billion has two parts. About $11.2 billion has already been spent on operating costs such as fuel, combat pay, aircraft, medical care and parts. Another $32.4 billion is for replacing munitions, damaged aircraft and other assets, money that has not yet been funded 1.

What the number leaves out

The estimate does not include damage to U.S. military facilities in eight Middle East countries, which could reach billions of dollars. It also leaves out future costs and the effects of inflation. The Congressional Budget Office, Congress's nonpartisan scorekeeper, estimates future costs at $2 billion to $3 billion per month 1.

Other estimates are lower, but they cover earlier periods. The CBO put the cost at $38.1 billion through July, and the Pentagon's inspector general put it at $33.4 billion through June. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified in July that the war would cost $37.5 billion through the end of September 1.

The Pentagon has also requested $67.1 billion in supplemental spending, partly to recover war costs. The Roll Call report does not say whether Congress has acted on that request 1.

Democrats press for answers

Nearly every Senate Democrat, along with independent Sens. Bernie Sanders and Angus King, signed a letter to Hegseth seeking a "complete accounting" of the war's costs 1. More recently, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, led a letter to Adm. Brad Cooper, who commands U.S. Central Command, the military headquarters that oversees the Middle East. It was co-signed by Sens. Mazie Hirono, Richard Blumenthal, Tammy Duckworth and Gary Peters 2.

Democrats say the estimate excludes damage from Iranian attacks on U.S. bases, and that this part of the estimate is classified 2. Democratic senators on the Senate Armed Services Committee cited "ongoing efforts to hide the true cost" of the war in their call on the Pentagon 2.

Why it matters

The war began in late February, and a Pentagon inspector general report found that Iranian strikes damaged hundreds of U.S. military buildings across eight Middle Eastern countries 2. Moody's Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi estimated the war has cost the average U.S. household nearly $2,000. That breaks down to $1,100 in energy prices, $540 in interest rates and $360 in military costs 2.

That matters because the bill is not only a Pentagon matter. Polls show growing public opposition to the war, partly because of its economic effects, and the war is weighing on the Republican outlook for the November midterms 1.

What happens next is up to Congress. It has to decide whether to approve the Pentagon's $67.1 billion request, and Democrats are pushing for the classified cost estimate to be made public 12.
