President Donald Trump called on Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, to resign from Congress immediately. He spoke Thursday at a rally in Iowa, after a federal court filing identified her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” 1

The filing was submitted Wednesday by the office of U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro and was obtained by Fox News. It concerns efforts to keep materials sealed in connection with the federal search warrant for Omar's Washington-area home. 1

Trump also said: “The Republicans have just picked up a seat in the House.” 1 Newsweek reported that his claim that Omar used a fraudulent name to take her congressional oath has not been established. 1

What Omar's office and Omar say

An Omar spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the claim is “completely false” and that Ilhan Omar is her real name. The spokesperson called the allegation a “desperate smear” meant to distract from Trump and Republican governance. 1

Trump said Elmi is the surname of Omar's former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Critics have alleged for years that he is her brother, and Omar has repeatedly denied it. 1

In an MS NOW interview with Chris Hayes on Wednesday, Omar called the claim “insane.” Asked whether she was related to her former husband, she said, “Not to my knowledge.” 12

The search behind the filing

Federal agents searched Omar's home on October 12. She said they took 17 items, including phones and notebooks. 23 The administration says she is under investigation over possible fraud tied to her immigration paperwork. Nobody has publicly charged her with a crime. 3

Pirro's lawyers have asked Chief Judge James Boasberg to extend deadlines for responding to requests to unseal the warrant records. The government's two proposed timelines would both put any release after the November 3 election. 3

Omar has said she did nothing wrong. 2 Asked about living in the home since the search, she said, “I mean obviously, I can't continue to live there.” 3

Why it matters

That matters because the public has not seen the warrant or any evidence, yet the president is already demanding that a sitting member of Congress step down. A court filing that lists a person's legal and alternate names is not a finding of wrongdoing. 1

The timing is also worth noting. Prosecutors have proposed timelines that would put any release of the records after Election Day, while the president talks about the case at rallies. 13
