Trump's ex-campaign manager Stepien calls GOP corruption fallout 'ugly' before midterms

Bill Stepien, who ran Trump's 2020 campaign, said on CNN that recent headlines about Kimberly Guilfoyle and other allegations have given Democrats an opening. It is a rare warning from inside Trump's circle 10 days before the Nov. 3 election.

Bill Stepien, who managed Donald Trump's 2020 presidential campaign, said Saturday that Republicans face a hard stretch on the issue of government corruption. He spoke on CNN's "Table for Five," according to Mediaite 1. The show's host, Abby Phillip, had cited a CNBC poll in which 36% of respondents named corruption as their top issue 1.

Stepien tied the poll to the recent resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle, Trump's ambassador to Greece. He said the poll was taken after that resignation and "the week-long news cycle, which was really, really bad" 1.

What Stepien pointed to

Stepien also reached back to a familiar Trump promise. "We talked a lot about draining the swamp 10 years ago," he said, and he added that people wonder what has changed when they see headlines about Guilfoyle 1.

Guilfoyle resigned Oct. 13 after the White House asked her to leave, NPR member station WUNC reported 2. The Wall Street Journal had reported allegations that she threatened a host-country official, accepted improper gifts and services, and offered to use her influence in exchange for payment of a large credit card bill 2. Reports also alleged she asked a Trump donor to pay a $100,000 bill and promised him access to the administration 2.

Guilfoyle called the allegations false. She said she intends to "vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity" 2. Her lawyers said she did nothing wrong and that the money she sought was for unpaid appearances and speeches that came before her nomination 2.

Trump said of her, "we didn't like what we were reading," and added that "she will not be there" 2. A U.S. official said the State Department's inspector general was looking into the allegations, though it was unclear whether a formal probe had begun 2.

Democrats and the Lewandowski question

Democrats responded to the Guilfoyle story with calls for scrutiny. Reps. Gregory Meeks of New York and Robert Garcia of California, along with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, called for an investigation, WUNC reported 2. Meeks is the top Democrat on House Foreign Affairs, Garcia holds that role on House Oversight, and Shaheen does on Senate Foreign Relations 2.

On the same CNN panel, former White House communications official Alyssa Farah Griffin raised Corey Lewandowski 1. Mediaite said the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the Justice Department is investigating allegations that Lewandowski personally profited while serving as an unpaid "Special Government Employee" at the Department of Homeland Security 1. Those are allegations, and Mediaite did not independently confirm them 1.

Why it matters

That matters because Stepien is no Democratic critic. He ran Trump's last winning-year-to-loss campaign, and he is describing the message problem in his own party's terms. Phillip said on the show that corruption "has broken through" with voters in a way it had not before 1.

The pattern is that a party that promised to clean up Washington is now answering questions about its own officials. Stepien did not say Republicans will lose, and he gave no forecast. He said the issue has given Democrats an opening 1.

What happens next is up to voters. The midterm election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Whether the State Department's inspector general opens a formal review of Guilfoyle, or the Justice Department's Lewandowski inquiry moves ahead, is not yet known 12.

The Record

  1. The White House asked Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign, and she quit within two hours 2.
  2. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Justice Department is investigating Corey Lewandowski over allegations he profited from his DHS role 1.
  3. Bill Stepien told CNN the corruption headlines are 'ugly' and give Democrats an opening 1.
