Governor — Oklahoma · First run

Cyndi Munson

Cyndi Munson is the Oklahoma House minority leader from Lawton. She won the Democratic primary with 74.9% and faces Republican Mike Mazzei, who edged Gentner Drummond in the August runoff, in a race rated Likely Republican by Cook and others.

On the ballot against Mike Mazzei (R)

Why it matters: Governor Kevin Stitt is term-limited, so Oklahoma will have a new governor, and the candidates differ sharply on school funding, taxes, the abortion ban and relations with the tribal nations.

In Cyndi's own words

We need to fund our public schools to the regional average and increase pay for teachers.
Cyndi Munson, Remarks at her campaign announcement, as reported by KSWO/KXII, Apr 15 source

Where Cyndi stands

Public schools
She would pay teachers and support staff competitively with surrounding states, fully fund public schools, and repeal the Parental Choice Tax voucher program. source
Abortion
She calls Oklahoma's abortion ban one of the strictest in the country and would support a state question to overturn it and write abortion access into the state constitution. source
Taxes
She would expand the child care, sales tax relief and Earned Income tax credits for lower- and middle-income earners and oppose further income tax cuts that mainly benefit the wealthiest. source
Tribal relations
She would treat the tribal nations as sovereign governments and make the Secretary of Native American Affairs a permanent cabinet position. source
