Federal law enforcement agents searched a Beverly Hills home early Tuesday as part of an investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat who resigned from Congress in April amid sexual misconduct allegations, the Associated Press reported, citing a law enforcement official and two people familiar with the investigation 1.
The home belongs to wealthy developer and Swalwell donor Stephen Cloobeck, where the former congressman spent time before resigning, according to those people, who spoke on condition of anonymity 1. Cloobeck founded the Diamond Resorts International timeshare company 1.
FBI spokesperson Lourdes Arocho said the bureau "early this morning … conducted an operation in the Los Angeles region related to an ongoing criminal investigation" 1. Arocho gave Newsweek the same statement and added, "We have no further comment" 2.
Messages seeking comment were left for Swalwell's attorney and for a lawyer who represented Cloobeck in another matter 1. It was not immediately clear whether Tuesday's search was conducted under the same investigation as an August operation 2.

The allegations and the denials
The San Francisco Chronicle, followed by CNN, first reported allegations that Swalwell sexually assaulted a woman twice, including when she worked for him 1. CNN also reported that three other women alleged various kinds of sexual misconduct by Swalwell, including sending them unsolicited explicit messages or nude photos 1. Swalwell has denied the allegations 2.
When he resigned, Swalwell said, "I will fight the serious false allegations made against me," and added, "However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make" 2.
Cloobeck told the New York Post in April that he cut ties with Swalwell as the accusations mounted 1. "I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women," he told the newspaper. "I support women's rights" 1.
A widening inquiry
In August, federal agents seized electronic devices from Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and searched his Washington, D.C., home 12. Swalwell was not arrested or detained during that operation 2.
The office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has said it is also investigating Swalwell after a former staffer told CNN and the Chronicle that Swalwell raped her at a hotel while he was in New York City for a charity gala in 2024 1. In a statement, Bragg's office encouraged "survivors and anyone with knowledge of these allegations to contact" its special victims division 1. Los Angeles prosecutors were also said to be weighing charges 1.
Swalwell, an Iowa native, was elected in 2012 and represented a House district east of San Francisco 1. He had been seen as one of the leading candidates in California's gubernatorial race before dropping out after the allegations surfaced 1.
That matters because the search lands seven days before the Nov. 3 midterm election, when Republicans hold the House, the Senate and the White House. The pattern in the copy is a case moving from news reports to physical searches of properties and devices, though no charges have been announced against Swalwell in the accounts cited here 12.
