Governor — Alaska · First run

Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins

Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins is a former Sitka state legislator who finished first in Alaska's August nonpartisan primary and is the only Democrat on the November ballot. He has out-raised the three Republicans combined, and the polls I opened show him ahead after ranked-choice counting.

On the ballot against Dave Bronson, Treg Taylor and Bernadette Wilson (R)

Why it matters: Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy is term-limited, so the seat is open, and Cook Political Report rates the race Lean Democratic, a possible flip from Republican to Democratic.

Where Jonathan stands

Education
He wants to fully fund public schools, amend the constitution to fund education a year ahead, and raise teacher pay with a defined-benefit retirement system. source
Health care
He would protect Medicaid expansion, expand in-home care for seniors and people with disabilities, and require price transparency from hospitals and drug companies. source
Energy and housing costs
He backs an all-of-the-above energy approach, a push for an Alaska natural gas pipeline, and cutting red tape to build affordable homes. source
Permanent Fund and oil taxes
He would constitutionally protect the entire Permanent Fund from overspending and require all oil and gas producers, including Hilcorp, to pay corporate income tax. source
Abortion and privacy
He would defend abortion rights and access to contraception and ban Flock cameras and similar AI surveillance statewide. source
