GOP Rep. Fine says anyone who lied on citizenship forms should be deported, Melania and Musk included

Florida Republican Randy Fine, asked about Melania Trump and Elon Musk, said anyone who lied on citizenship paperwork should be denaturalized and deported. He has no knowledge of any allegation against either of them. He is also calling for a review of every citizen naturalized since 1990, amid a federal probe of Rep. Ilhan Omar.

Rep. Randy Fine, a Florida Republican, said Monday night that anyone who lied on immigration paperwork to become a U.S. citizen should be denaturalized and deported. Denaturalization means stripping a person of citizenship that was earlier granted. He spoke in an interview with NewsNation 1.

The host asked whether scrutiny of Rep. Ilhan Omar's citizenship should extend to first lady Melania Trump and billionaire Elon Musk. Fine answered that it should apply to "Anyone who was not honest in their immigration paperwork." 1

Fine added that he did not know the circumstances of either person's immigration case. He said he was unaware of any allegations against them 1. Newsweek reported that it had asked the White House and Musk's representatives for comment 1.

Melania Trump was born in Slovenia and became a citizen in 2006, according to the White House. Musk was born in South Africa and became a citizen in 2002, according to his biography by Walter Isaacson 1.

A call to review citizens since 1990

Fine also called for a reevaluation of everyone who became a naturalized citizen since 1990. He said he believed citizenship fraud was widespread in Minnesota, and he cited allegations involving Omar, a Minnesota Democrat 1. "So yeah, I think Ilhan Omar needs to be the first. She certainly should not be the last," he said 1.

Fine has made similar calls before. In an earlier interview with the Floridian, a Florida news site, he said Omar "should be denaturalized and deported." 2

The investigation of Omar

Federal agents searched Omar's Washington-area home on October 12. The Justice Department has called the search part of an "ongoing federal criminal investigation." Omar has not been charged 12.

The Associated Press reported that authorities have issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including to some of Omar's relatives. The scope of the investigation remains unclear 1. A Floridian report said two sources described the probe as a fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork 2.

Omar came to the U.S. as a refugee from Somalia and became a citizen in 2000. She has accused President Trump of using the investigation to intimidate his political opponents 1. Trump called on her last Thursday to resign, alleging she used a different name to get elected 1.

Omar has also denied long-circulating, unproven claims that she married a relative to help him enter the country. She called them "insane" 1. She told MS NOW on October 21 that she can't keep living in her home after the search 1.

What happens next

No charges have been announced against Omar, and no one has alleged wrongdoing by Melania Trump or Musk. Newsweek said it had also asked Omar's campaign and the Justice Department for comment 1.

That matters because Fine's standard, taken at face value, reaches well beyond one member of Congress. Naturalized citizens are a large group of voters, and many are over 55. The midterm election is November 3.

The Record

  1. Omar became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, after arriving as a refugee from Somalia 1.
  2. Federal agents searched Omar's home as part of what the Justice Department called an ongoing criminal investigation; she has not been charged 12.
  3. Fine told NewsNation that anyone who lied on citizenship paperwork should be denaturalized and deported 1.
