U.S. Senate — Maine · First run

Troy Jackson

A former logger from northern Aroostook County who rose to Maine Senate president, Jackson was chosen by Maine Democrats at a July 25 convention after primary winner Graham Platner withdrew. He is taking on five-term Sen. Susan Collins, and October polls show a toss-up race.

On the ballot against Susan Collins (R)

Why it matters: Collins holds the Republican seat Democrats most want to flip, and if she holds on, the Democratic path to a Senate majority narrows.

Medicaid cuts dominate Senate debates as Republicans defend their 2025 law

With the Nov. 3 midterm less than two weeks away, Democrats in at least six Senate races are attacking Republicans over the Medicaid cuts in the GOP's 2025 budget law and promising to restore the money. Republicans are mostly pointing to a $50 billion rural health fund, which ends in four years. The cuts are permanent.
