As a 3.6% Social Security raise nears, AARP is fighting a budget group's idea to give every retiree the same dollar increase. The next Congress may have to choose how to close the program's 2032 shortfall, and few Republicans have said what they would do.
In a release timed to Trump's Ohio rally on Wednesday, the White House said the average senior will pay no federal tax on Social Security. The 2025 law added a temporary $6,000 deduction for people 65 and older. It did not repeal the tax on benefits, and millions of returns still owe it.
The Social Security Administration says it has corrected nearly 15% of active Social Security numbers, adding death dates and citizenship status. Seniors' advocates warn that the immigration database it relied on has flagged real citizens as noncitizens, and that those errors could now sit in the files that pay benefits.
