Trump says he'll probably become 'Mr. Veto' if Democrats win Congress on Tuesday
In a Fox News interview aired Sunday, the president previewed two years of veto fights if Republicans lose a chamber. He also said he would likely make deals at some point.

President Trump said Sunday that he would probably become "Mr. Veto" if Democrats take control of Congress in Tuesday's midterm election. He made the remark in an interview with Miranda Devine of the New York Post that aired on Fox News 12. The full interview was scheduled for release Monday 2.
I'll probably become Mr. Veto
Trump also said "at some point, we'll probably make deals" with a Democratic Congress 2. He added that he hopes Republicans will not have to worry about it, and he has consistently predicted GOP wins 2.
A threat he made last week, too
The idea is not new. On Friday, Oct. 23, Trump told reporters on the South Lawn that if Democrats won, "what happens is I veto everything" 4. He said Democrats come back to negotiate after repeated vetoes 4.
What happens is I veto everything, and then the Democrats come and they want to make a deal.
A veto is not the last word. Congress can override one, but that takes a two-thirds vote in both the House and the Senate 3.

Democrats split on how to respond
Sen. Brian Schatz, a Democrat, told CNN on Oct. 22 that Democrats should not propose bills Trump is certain to veto 3. He said Democrats should instead pursue "a few things" that ease people's financial pain 3. In a separate statement about using leverage if Democrats take power, he pointed to ending the Iran war and reversing Medicaid and food-aid cuts in the 2025 tax and spending law 3.
Rep. Ro Khanna of California took a more aggressive line. He wrote on X, "Make him veto Medicare for All," and listed other ideas, including a $25 living wage, free college and taxes on billionaires 3.
What happens next
Democratic strategist Jim Manley said Trump needs two things from Congress: an increase in the debt ceiling and a government that stays open 3. If both chambers flip and Trump's gambit does not cause Democrats to fold, the government could shut down again and the country could breach its borrowing limit, the report said 3. The lame-duck session is the period between the election and the new Congress taking office. Manley said that if Democrats win both chambers, they would have real leverage, though Senate rules would still force them to deal with Republicans 3.
Reuters reported that senior White House officials, including Stephen Miller and Russell Vought, have planned ways to pursue Trump's agenda without Congress, including executive orders 2. Trump has signed at least 292 executive orders in his second term, according to the American Presidency Project 2.
That matters because a veto fight is mostly about who blinks first on must-pass bills. Trump's own words suggest he sees vetoes as a way to force Democrats to the table. Democrats have not agreed on whether to send him bills he will reject or to focus on a smaller list.
Several election forecasters have updated their predictions in favor of Democrats crossing the 218-seat threshold needed for a House majority 4. The results come Tuesday.
