Georgia's Bottoms, first Black woman elected governor, details her path forward
Keisha Lance Bottoms, Georgia's first Democratic governor-elect since 1998, says she will seek bipartisan deals on health care and school funding. Republicans still hold the state Senate, so other promises may have to wait.

Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former Atlanta mayor, was elected governor of Georgia this week. She is the state's first Democratic governor in more than two decades and the first Black woman ever elected governor in the country 1.
She campaigned on lowering costs, expanding access to health care and pushing back against the Trump administration, PBS NewsHour reported 1. In an interview with PBS anchor Geoff Bennett, she described what the win means to her and how she plans to govern 1.
A personal and historic win
Bottoms said her family goes back at least five generations in Georgia. She said she can trace its roots to a plantation in Crawfordville, where her great-great-grandparents were once enslaved 1.
She said the statewide result, which she called a "blue tsunami," shows a shift in Georgia and across the South that will reshape the Democratic Party for years 1. She noted that Georgia has not elected a Democratic governor since 1998 1.

Why Democrats say it worked
Bottoms said the campaign was built on the cost of living. Voters asked her directly what she would do about it, and she went back with plans 1.
we needed to focus on the things that mattered to people and not get distracted and not get pulled into fights that weren't productive for us to be able to deliver.
Newsweek reported that Georgia Democrats also rebuilt their state party. At Sen. Jon Ossoff's urging, they chose Charlie Bailey as full-time chair, and a coordinated campaign helped Ossoff win by more than 10 points 2.
Nationally, Democrats flipped seven Senate seats and won a majority of governorships for the first time since 2010, Newsweek reported 2.
What Republicans still control
Bottoms faces a divided legislature. Democrats won the Georgia House, but Republicans still control the state Senate 1. She said Democrats are "one seat away" from controlling it 1.
She has promised to raise the minimum wage. She said that may be one of the things that has to wait. In her words, "it may be something that we have to wait until we have control of the Senate" 1.
we're going to try and find those things that we can get bipartisan agreement on, those things we can get done immediately.
She said she believes health care and education funding can win support across party lines right away 1.
What happens next
The interview did not give a date for her swearing-in or a list of bills. The first test will be whether Republican senators agree to the health care and school funding measures she says can pass quickly 1.
That matters because Georgia's state Senate majority, not the governor's office, may decide how fast prices and health costs change for families. The pattern across this year's results is that Democrats won by talking about daily costs. Bottoms says she plans to govern the same way 12.
