Former Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday urged Democrats not to make a third attempt to impeach President Trump if they win back the House in next week's midterm elections 1. She spoke in an interview with MeidasTouch's Aaron Parnas 1.
I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea, just to be honest with you
Harris said the party has limited resources and that the energy should go into accountability and investigations 12. She also pointed to her own time in the Senate, saying the votes aren't there 1.
'Get stuff done'
Harris did not tell Democrats to go easy on the administration. She said they should be "uncompromising" and not "sit around, you know, being genteel about the relationships" 1.
She named two areas for accountability: cuts to health care and oversight of the Iran war 1. After the election, she said, "our attitude has to be to get stuff done" 1.

What Democratic leaders have said
Democrats have not ruled out a third impeachment of Trump if they win the House, The Hill reports 1. They also have not ruled out impeaching members of the administration, such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth 1.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, was asked about another Trump impeachment by ABC News last month. He did not say yes or no 1.
We’ve got to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution, and then let the chips fall where they may, in the best interests of the American people
Republicans say they expect Democrats to move quickly. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, told pro-Trump pundit Scott Jennings on Tuesday that an impeachment effort was coming 1.
It’s guaranteed, probably on the first day — first or second day
The history
Democrats first impeached Trump in late 2019, over accusations that he asked Ukraine's president to investigate Joe Biden and his family 1. The Senate acquitted him in February 2020, by 48-52 on abuse of power and 47-53 on obstruction 1.
The House impeached him again in 2021 over the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. In February 2021 the Senate voted 57-43 to convict, ten votes short of the 67 needed 1. All Democrats and seven Republicans voted "guilty" 1.
Trump is the only U.S. president impeached twice, and a third impeachment would be unprecedented 1.
What happens next
Harris is not in Congress and does not decide what House Democrats do. Her comments still matter because she was the party's 2024 presidential nominee, and she is weighing in days before voters decide who controls the House.
The pattern is that Republican leaders are already telling voters impeachment is coming, while a leading Democrat is urging a focus on hearings and investigations. The party has not settled on its plan. That decision would come after the votes are counted.
The Record
- The Senate acquitted Trump on abuse of power (48-52) and obstruction (47-53) after his first impeachment 1.
- The Senate voted 57-43 to convict Trump after the Jan. 6 impeachment, short of the 67 votes required 1.
- Harris told MeidasTouch's Aaron Parnas that impeachment is "not a good idea" and urged a focus on investigations 1.
