Elon Musk put another $76 million into his super PAC in the first half of October. That pushes his political giving this election cycle above $442 million 1. A super PAC is a political group that can raise and spend unlimited sums to influence elections, as long as it does not formally coordinate with a candidate.
The new money went to America PAC, which Musk controls. Federal Election Commission filings made Thursday, Oct. 22, show three direct gifts: $12.6 million on Oct. 6, $19 million on Oct. 8 and $43.2 million on Oct. 14 3. His company, United States of America Inc., added $1.98 million, bringing the first two weeks of October to nearly $77 million 23.
Musk had given about $366 million through the end of September 3. His 2024 spending was roughly $290 million, so he has already passed it 13.
Where the money is going
America PAC has spent tens of millions of dollars on online ads, direct mail and texts in competitive House and Senate races 1. It reported about $42.7 million in spending in the first two weeks of October. It had $46.5 million in cash on hand as of Oct. 14 2.

Texas is the biggest single bet. Musk gave $158 million to a Republican Senate committee, which shifted the money to a super PAC backing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, against Democrat James Talarico 12. America PAC has also spent about $27.9 million opposing Talarico and $4.8 million supporting Paxton 2.
Musk has also funded the House Republican super PAC, President Donald Trump's MAGA Inc., an effort to overturn Alaska's ranked-choice voting and several individual GOP candidates 1.
What critics and Musk's side say

deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, wrote on Oct. 21 that Musk's super PACs had by then spent over $400 million 3. America PAC spokesperson Andrew Romeo defended the effort in a statement. He said that if Democrats win control of Washington, America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country 3.
Not all of Musk's giving is visible. The New York Times has reported that he has also given to groups that do not name their donors, so the full total is not publicly known. Outlets differ on the total, with some reporting about $445 million, because they count the October gifts a little differently 12.
Why it matters
That matters because one person's checks now rival the budgets of whole party committees. The races Musk is targeting are close. A New York Times/Siena poll released Oct. 3 had Talarico ahead of Paxton 51% to 45% among likely Texas voters. A later Siena College/ReconMR poll had Talarico ahead 48% to 44% 3.
The filing made Thursday is the last America PAC report before the election 23. Voters will learn how the money was used only after the Nov. 3 midterms. Control of the Senate and House will decide what Congress does about health care, Social Security and prices.
