Musk's $446 million makes him the biggest single-cycle political donor in modern history

Federal Election Commission data show Elon Musk has put at least $445.77 million into Republican-aligned groups this cycle. That is more than any donor in a single election cycle in modern U.S. history, days before the midterms.

Elon Musk has put at least $445.77 million into Republican-aligned political action committees (PACs) and groups since last year. That figure comes from Federal Election Commission (FEC) data as of Oct. 29, as reported by The Guardian. The paper says it makes him the largest single-cycle political donor in modern U.S. history 1.

A PAC is a group that raises and spends money to influence elections. The Guardian reports that Musk's giving dwarfs that of megadonors such as George Soros and Michael Bloomberg 1.

Where the money went

Musk's largest single contribution, $216 million, went to his own America PAC. The Guardian reports that the group has targeted 43 House and Senate races with television ads, digital ads, text messages and mailers 1.

He also gave $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC that supports Texas Republican Ken Paxton's Senate campaign 1. Those two gifts are listed separately in the reporting, and this brief does not add them together.

America PAC has spent the most in Texas, where Paxton faces Democrat James Talarico in what The Guardian calls the most expensive race of the midterms. It has put more than $33 million into efforts to elect Paxton and $28 million into content attacking Talarico 1.

A sharp late increase

Last year, Musk claimed he would step back from large political donations after putting nearly $300 million toward Donald Trump's 2024 campaign 1. The FEC data since then show he has spent heavily again, including about $200 million in the final two months 1.

The spending started small. In early September, the Washington Examiner reported that America PAC's filings showed $800,475.74 across 44 expenditures 2.

Musk has also promoted the PAC's ads to his more than 200 million followers on X, the platform he owns 1. In October he amplified one ad with a post claiming that Talarico wants to "trans your kids and destroy the border." 1

What happens next

The midterm election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The Guardian notes that current polls predict Democrats will win a majority 1. FEC totals could still rise as late spending is reported.

The Guardian also notes that Musk's companies have business with the federal government. SpaceX landed contracts this year for Trump's missile defense program, and the Pentagon is using Musk's Grok AI chatbot 1. The newspaper says Musk has benefited from the administration's lax policies toward regulating tech and artificial intelligence 1.

That matters because it shows how far one person's money can reach. Musk has put more money into this cycle than every top Silicon Valley donor, himself included, spent on the 2024 presidential race combined 1. Even so, The Guardian says the sum is still only a tiny fraction of his overall wealth 1.
