Qatari mediators went back to Tehran on Friday, Oct. 30, to try to move the United States and Iran toward a deal. Iran's state news agency IRNA said the delegation arrived that morning 2. Al Jazeera reported that the Qatari delegation acted in coordination with U.S. officials 2.
The delegation was led by a senior adviser to Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister, according to Al Jazeera 2. Its aim is to revive the ceasefire between the two countries 2. No deal has been announced.
What set off the visit
Reuters reported that Vice President JD Vance contacted Mohsen Rezaei, Iran's security chief 3. Al Jazeera reported that a Qatari delegation delivered Vance's letter, which reportedly proposed a new diplomatic process aimed at preventing another round of U.S. strikes 2.
Trump denied that the Vance outreach was aimed at rekindling wider peace talks and said it was only about getting medical aid into Iran, according to CBS News 1.

Where the two sides still differ
As of Friday, Iran had not replied to the U.S., according to CBS News 1.
Trump has said the war will end soon, according to CBS News 1. Reuters reported that he has said the U.S. will not strike Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections 3.
Mixed signals from Washington
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump warned Gulf allies to prepare for a short, intense military campaign after the midterms, according to Al Jazeera 2. That sits uneasily beside the diplomacy underway. Al Jazeera's sources said a U.S.-Iran meeting could happen within a week, in Doha or Istanbul 2.
That matters because voters are being asked to judge a war while its next step is still undecided. We could not find a Democratic response to the Tehran trip in the coverage we read. What happens after Tuesday may depend on whether Iran answers and whether the Vance-Rezaei channel holds.
Next to watch: Iran's reply, any announcement of a meeting in Doha or Istanbul, and whether Trump's pledge of no strikes before Nov. 3 holds.
