Trump shows off Venezuelan oil tanker in Texas and floats Venezuela as the 51st state

At a Corpus Christi rally seven days before the midterms, Trump claimed a tanker carrying "one million barrels of oil" from Venezuela and said the country could someday become "a prosperous 51st state." He tied the oil deal to his closing pitch as fuel prices stay high after the Iran war.

President Donald Trump used a campaign rally in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday to show off an oil tanker he said carried Venezuelan crude, and to suggest that Venezuela could someday become the 51st U.S. state 12.

Trump claimed the ship had "one million barrels of oil on it" and said the oil was being provided "at zero cost to the American taxpayer" 1. He called the arrangement "the greatest oil victory in history" 1.

The deal was struck with Venezuela's interim government, which is backed by Trump's administration, nine months after the U.S. attacked the country in January and captured its long-serving leader, Nicolás Maduro 1. The crude is to be processed in Texas refineries 23.

Trump said Venezuela "will become a prosperous country, and who knows? Maybe some day soon it'll become a prosperous 51st state" 1. The Hill reported he added: "That's possible. Let's make it the 51st state" 2.

He also said that "instead of a president, we'll have an election for a governor" 2. Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, said in May that Venezuela has no plans of becoming a U.S. state: "We will continue to defend our integrity, our sovereignty, our independence, our history" 2.

Why the oil deal is on the campaign trail

The timing is tied to fuel prices. Gas prices have shot up nationwide after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a passageway for 20% of the world's oil supplies, following Trump's entry into the war with Iran in February 1. Trump said on social media that fuel prices "will soon come plummeting down" 1.

The deal has drawn skepticism from critics who complain the administration has not pushed a transition to democracy in Venezuela, where elections have not been held since Maduro was detained by U.S. forces and taken to New York to face criminal charges 1.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled with Trump to Texas, and a State Department official said he was acting in his capacity as national security adviser, not as secretary of state 2. The officials who described the plans to The Associated Press spoke on the condition of anonymity 3.

Trump also has a rally scheduled in Lubbock, where he is trying to shore up support for Senate candidate Ken Paxton, who is in a tight race with Democrat James Talarico 3.

That matters because the president is asking voters to credit him for an oil supply deal while prices at the pump remain the central issue of the closing week. The pattern is a familiar one: a foreign policy announcement presented as a cost-of-living fix, with the details still to be tested at the refinery and at the ballot box.
