Trump compares 18 Iran war deaths to Vietnam, says war will 'end soon' with no plan

At a Florida rally four days before the midterms, the president said the U.S. toll in Iran was small next to past wars. He offered no timetable for ending a conflict that is now eight months old.

President Donald Trump compared the deaths of 18 American service members in the Iran war with U.S. losses in Vietnam during a Friday rally in Daytona Beach, Florida. He said the current toll was far too many, but that other wars killed thousands and thousands. 1

He also said Iran is finished and that the war was going to end soon. Newsweek reported he gave no further details. 1 Earlier Friday he told a Kansas City radio station the conflict was going to get wrapped up soon. 1

We lost 18 great warriors, and 18 is far too many, but in all these other wars you lost thousands and thousands of people, but they don’t bring that up.

The numbers have moved

On October 16, Newsweek reported that the official number of U.S. military deaths connected to operations against Iran had risen to 21. 2 That is the Pentagon's count, and it is higher than the 18 Trump cited on Friday. 12

Defense Department figures show 40,934 service members were killed in action in Vietnam. Another 5,299 died of wounds, and 1,085 missing personnel were declared dead. 1

This is not the first time Trump has made the comparison. In July, at another event, he said the U.S. lost 200,000 Americans in Vietnam. A report on those remarks said the actual figure is 58,000. 3

No public path out

The war began February 28. Newsweek described American personnel still at risk, tankers under attack, mines in the Strait of Hormuz and escalating strikes by Houthi forces in Yemen aimed at Saudi Arabia. 1

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said a supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of oil hit a mine and caught fire Friday. Newsweek did not independently verify that account or three similar ones Iran reported. 1 A UK maritime monitoring center has logged 145 regional incidents since the fighting began. 1

On diplomacy, Qatar is pressing for an agreement. Iranian media reported that Tehran has not answered a letter from Vice President JD Vance to a senior figure, Mohsen Rezaei. Trump says that outreach concerns medical aid, not a revival of peace talks. 1

Trump also said, "We need a guarantee there’ll never be a nuclear weapon." He did not explain how that would be secured or what either side would have to give up. 1 He has said the U.S. will not strike Iran before the election. 1

The political reading

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said bringing an unpopular president into the state twice in one week showed Republican anxiety. She called the visit a "last-ditch effort" to rescue struggling campaigns. 1 The Florida GOP chairman, Evan Power, said Trump went to Daytona Beach to mobilize a large Republican electorate. 1

Late Friday, the Cook Political Report moved Florida's Senate race from "Solid Republican" to "Likely Republican." Republicans are still favored. 1

That matters because Trump is asking voters to judge the war by comparison with earlier wars, not by whether there is a clear way out. Newsweek noted that each casualty is a family changed permanently, and that his promise of a quick finish has come with no public timetable or settlement framework. 1 The White House had not responded to Newsweek's request for comment as of Saturday morning. 1
