Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, is on a final campaign swing with progressive candidates before the Nov. 3 election. She packed rooms in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where chants of “AOC” broke out, according to The Associated Press. Hundreds of students came out to see her in Ohio and Maine 1.
On Friday night she was in California's Central Valley, backing a progressive who is trying to unseat a House Republican 1. She planned to campaign Saturday in Nevada 1.
A test of her brand
Ocasio-Cortez, 37, has tens of millions of social media followers. She is now thinking about her next move, including a possible run for the White House or the Senate 1.
The AP says she is offering a largely untested idea: that her progressive politics can appeal beyond the Democratic base and help the party win close races 1. She put it this way to a recent fundraiser:

We have written a check on the left, saying if you champion these policies that have popular support, we can win,
In Portland, Maine, she appeared with Troy Jackson, the Democratic Senate nominee trying to defeat five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins. She said consultants in Washington would tell him not to sit on a stage next to her. Jackson answered that he wanted to sit beside her 1.
Maine will be pivotal in deciding which party controls the Senate. So will Michigan, where she appeared with Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in Iron Mountain, in a county President Donald Trump won by more than 30 percentage points 1.
The Central Valley test
In California, she rallied with Randy Villegas. He defeated a rival backed by Democratic Party leaders in the primary and now faces Republican Rep. David Valadao. The AP calls it one of the most competitive House races in the country 1.
The district is nearly 75% Hispanic, and Democrats have long struggled to turn out working-class Latino voters there 1. NPR reported in May that Valadao had voted to cut Medicaid funding. Medicaid is the government health program for lower-income people. NPR also said the district has the highest Medicaid enrollment in the country 2.
Villegas, a political science professor and school board member, described his message to NPR as a fight about “bottom versus top and working families who've been left behind by politicians in both parties.” 2
The doubters
Not everyone thinks her appeal will carry over. Former Rep. Fred Upton, a Michigan Republican who voted to impeach Trump in 2021, says winning swing states requires reaching independent voters 1.
There's a place in the party for her but I don't think it's a majority,
Next, Nevada. It holds the second contest on the 2028 political calendar, and the AP says it would be crucial to her path to the nomination. Working-class Latinos are a major force in its Democratic politics, and the state overwhelmingly backed Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2020 caucuses 1.
That matters because the House and Senate are both within reach, and the party is still deciding which message and which leaders to put forward. Results on Nov. 3 will show whether her crowds turn into votes 1.
