Pete Buttigieg, speaking at an event in Branchburg, New Jersey, says "a certain president" tried to shut down the project not because anything was wrong with it, but because people there didn't vote for him. He says the president at one point demanded Penn Station be renamed after him, and that the money only flowed again after a court order found what the president and the Secretary of Transportation were doing was illegal.

Now you may have heard that a certain president tried to shut down that project Not because yeah Not because there was anything wrong with it But because he was mad that people living in this area didn't vote his way. It really was that simple At one point he demanded that Penn Station be renamed after him and then maybe He'd reopen the bridge. In fact, you know, I got the money flowing again. It was not a strongly worded letter And it was not the efforts of your congressman, Tom Keen. It was a court order establishing that what the President and the Secretary of Transportation were trying to do was illegal.
