Governor — Texas · First run

Gina Hinojosa

Gina Hinojosa is an Austin Democrat in the Texas House and a former Austin school board president. Polls show a close race against Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who is seeking a fourth term, and the most recent poll I opened has Abbott ahead 51% to 48%.

On the ballot against Greg Abbott (R)

Why it matters: Reporting calls this Abbott's most competitive race yet, as he seeks a fourth term. It says three recent polls had a Democrat narrowly ahead, which the article called unprecedented in Texas.

In Gina's own words

I will continue fighting for a Texas that puts working people over billionaires

Where Gina stands

Public schools
She would end the STAAR test, pause the A-F school ratings, oppose school vouchers, and remove TEA Commissioner Mike Morath on her first day in office. source
Affordability and taxes
She would send one-time $1,500 refund checks to every Texas household from the Rainy Day Fund. She would also cut property taxes by ending corporate subsidies. source
Data centers and electric bills
She would have the Public Utility Commission freeze residential electricity rates until data centers and other large users are required to pay their own costs. source
