Democrat Beau Bayh won Indiana's secretary of state race, becoming the first Democrat elected to statewide office in the Republican stronghold in more than a decade 1. He defeated Republican Max Engling, who conceded around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday 1.
Bayh led with 51.7 percent of the vote to Engling's 42.6 percent, according to Decision Desk HQ 1. The race drew national attention as Democrats sought to break the GOP's grip on statewide elections 1.
The victory marks a breakthrough for Indiana Democrats, who have not won a statewide election since 2012 1. It came after a turbulent campaign to replace outgoing Secretary of State Diego Morales, a Republican 1.
Bayh, the son of former Sen. Evan Bayh, told supporters at a hotel in downtown Indianapolis that Hoosiers had voted for change 1. He said too many decisions had been made behind closed doors by insiders and that too many families had played by the rules while people in power played by indifference 1.
He ran a campaign focused on winning over moderate and conservative voters, emphasizing his military background and promising greater accountability in the secretary of state's office 1. His appeal extended beyond traditional Democratic strongholds: he led in Marion and Lake counties, home to large Democratic voting blocs, while also making inroads in Republican-leaning areas of central and southern Indiana, including counties that overwhelmingly backed President Trump in 2024 1.
The race became an unexpected battleground after Morales, the incumbent, was denied renomination at the state GOP convention in June following a series of controversies surrounding his tenure 1. Engling secured the Republican nomination but faced a crowded general election field that included former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard, running under the newly formed Lincoln Party banner, and Libertarian Lauri Shillings 1.
Engling conceded at a Republican watch party in Indianapolis, telling supporters the voters had made their decision and it was not what they wanted 1. He wished Bayh success for the good of all Hoosiers in Indiana 1.
The pattern is broader than one office. In Indiana's 5th Congressional District, Democrat J.D. Ford defeated three-term Rep. Victoria Spartz in a district Trump won by nearly 17 percentage points two years ago 2. Ford is the first openly gay member of the Indiana General Assembly, and Spartz is the first and only Ukrainian-born member of Congress 2.
That matters because the same wave reached other deep-red states. In Kansas, pastor Adam Hamilton defeated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, becoming the first Democrat elected to represent the state in the Senate since 1932 3. In Iowa, Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand won the governor's race, the first Democrat elected to that office since Chet Culver in 2006 4.
Bayh takes over an office that oversees elections in a state where Republicans have controlled statewide politics for years. His win, and Ford's, suggest Indiana voters were willing to split their tickets in 2026 12.
