Trump says he'd have won Vietnam War 'in a week' at Iowa rally, mixes up a city
At a Dubuque rally, the president said he could have won the Vietnam War in a week and named a city that was the capital of America's ally. He spoke two days before a midterm vote where military service and sacrifice are on voters' minds.

President Donald Trump told a rally in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday that he could have won the Vietnam War in a week. He also appeared to mix up a city central to that war, Newsweek reported. 1
Trump was talking about U.S. operations in Iran and Venezuela and comparing them with earlier wars. He said of Vietnam, "thousands and thousands of people killed, hundreds of thousands of people killed," and said of Afghanistan, "we never fight to win." 1

The Agent Orange moment
Trump then tried to recall the chemical the U.S. military used in Vietnam. He called it "whatever the hell that red c**p is," and said it was dropped "in the forest." 1
The crowd shouted "Agent Orange." That is the herbicide the U.S. military used to destroy Vietnamese forests during the war, Newsweek explained. Trump repeated the name and added that it was red. 1

The city he named
Trump said the U.S. spent years dropping the chemical instead of "going after Ho Chi Minh City and the different places." 1 Newsweek noted that Ho Chi Minh City was formerly called Saigon. During the war it was the capital of U.S.-allied South Vietnam. 1
In other words, the city Trump said he would have gone after was the capital of the country America was fighting to defend. Newsweek said he appeared to mix it up. 1
I would have won that war in one week.
Other voices
Raw Story reported that the rally was held for Rep. Ashley Hinson, the Republican running for Senate in Iowa against Democrat Josh Turek. 2 Raw Story said Trump also claimed he could have solved the war in Afghanistan in a week. 2
Critics quoted by Raw Story included Gregory Brew, described by the outlet as an Iran oil analyst for the Eurasia Group. He called the boast "curious" and noted the U.S. was at war in Afghanistan throughout Trump's first term. Jonah Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch, said Trump could have won Afghanistan in his first term but spent much of it trying to get out. 2
Why it matters
That matters because Trump made the claim while defending his own wars. He was comparing Iran and Venezuela with conflicts that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, by his own account. 1 Many older voters lived through Vietnam or have family who served.
The pattern is a confident claim of easy victory with little detail. Trump's own words are on the record for voters to weigh before Tuesday's election.
