John James voted six times against ending Iran war, then said to 'end this war quickly'
The Republican running for Michigan governor says his position on the Iran war never changed. His House votes and his own posts show a congressman who backed the war until shortly before he began calling for its end.

Rep. John James, the Republican running for governor of Michigan, now says the Iran war should end quickly. He also says his position has not changed 3. The record shows he voted six times against House resolutions aimed at ending the war, most recently on Sept. 15 12.
Bridge Michigan published its fact check of the shift on Wednesday, six days before the election 1. That matters because voters are weighing the war's costs right now. The Pentagon's count of U.S. military deaths has reached 23, and Michigan gas costs far more than it did before the war 189.
Then: praise for the war and six no votes
On Feb. 28, James said on social media that Iran's "decades of terror" must be answered for 1. A month later, on March 26, he praised the president's approach 1.
When President Trump says Peace through Strength he means it. Iran found that out.
A war powers resolution is Congress's way of directing a president to pull American forces out of fighting. On April 16, the House voted on one that told the president to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran. It failed 213 to 214, and the House clerk's official roll call lists James as a no 5. On a margin that thin, any one no vote that had switched would have changed the result.

The House later passed versions of the measure. By Sept. 15, seven Republicans were willing to vote yes, a record for these resolutions, according to Jewish Insider. One of them was James's fellow Michigan Republican, Rep. Tom Barrett 6. James voted no, his sixth such vote 1.
Another of those seven Republicans, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, gave her reason in terms of cost at the pump 6.
I will not vote to keep our soldiers in an open-ended war, with Iowans paying too much at the pump.
Now: 'end this war quickly'
One week after that vote, on Sept. 22, James told a virtual town hall that the war should end 3. His comments came a day after Mike Rogers, Michigan's Republican Senate nominee, posted a video saying the war needed to end quickly 1.
We need to end this war quickly because war is terrible and no one likes war
James rejected the idea that this was a change. "The position has always been, I hate war," he said, adding that he is a combat veteran 3. Bridge Michigan's review of his public comments and his votes found that he had backed the war before calling for it to end 1.
He has been pressed on this twice in debates. At the Oct. 6 debate in Grand Rapids, he said, "I struggle with that vote." He added, "Iran must not have a nuke" 2. At the Oct. 15 debate in Detroit, he said, "I have called for this war to be over weeks ago" 4.
That last claim fits the calendar, but only so far. The earliest call we found in the reports we reviewed is the Sept. 22 town hall, about three weeks before that debate 34. It also came after all six votes 1.
Where the attacks on James go too far
Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic nominee, has repeatedly attacked James over the votes. She has said James "could've voted to end the war in Iran that has driven gas up to $5" 1.
It's because of a reckless war in Iran that my opponent has voted for six times, including just a few weeks ago, to support.
Her wording needs one correction. Bridge Michigan found that James did not vote to start the war. His six votes were against resolutions trying to end it 2. The resolutions also had limits: a report on the House's July vote said that measure would not have the force of law and would not go to the president for a signature 11.
Even so, each vote put a member of Congress on the record about whether the war should go on. James is now emphasizing his words since Sept. 22 alongside those votes.
What the war has cost so far
On March 1, President Trump said the conflict would last four to five weeks. Several ceasefires have since collapsed 1. The Pentagon's toll now stands at 23 U.S. military deaths, 11 from hostile action and 12 not. The two most recent, both airmen, were logged on Oct. 29 9.
Michigan gas averaged about $3.00 before the war, according to Bridge Michigan 1. AAA, the motor club, reported $4.83 on Oct. 26. That was up 32 cents in a week and $1.75 above a year earlier, with crude oil back above $100 a barrel 7. By Saturday, AAA's daily figure for Michigan had fallen to about $4.57 8.
James has recently backed suspending state and federal gas taxes. A federal gas tax holiday would likely require congressional approval, and House members are not expected back for votes until after the election, Bridge Michigan reports 1. So the relief he supports is not expected to come from the House before voters decide.
Benson has moved on gas taxes too. She first backed suspending the 18-cent federal tax but opposed a state break, warning it could "potentially blow in the state budget." She has since said she is open to suspending Michigan's 52-cent tax. House Speaker Matt Hall, a Republican, called that unrealistic given its role in a road funding deal 2.
The Medicaid line, and the fine print
The same debate produced another claim worth reading closely. Medicaid is the government health program for people with low incomes. James said, "Medicaid will not be taken away from people who are working at least 80 hours." Benson told him the "Big, Beautiful Bill" he voted for "is designed to make it harder for people to stay on Medicaid" 2.
Here is what Bridge Michigan reports about the law. Starting Dec. 31, 2026, able-bodied adults under 65 must prove twice a year that they complete at least 80 hours a month of work, schooling or service. Seniors, parents of children 14 and younger, and people with disabilities are exempt. Federal savings are estimated at more than $900 billion over a decade 2. James's line mentions only the 80 hours, not the twice-a-year proof.
Where the race stands
A Mitchell Research poll taken Oct. 26-27 for CBS Detroit and other Michigan stations found Benson at 49% and James at 44% among 636 likely voters. The margin of error was 3.9 points. In early October, the same pollster had it 46% to 39%. The firm said James "remains competitive among men and older voters" 10.
The Record
- James posts that Iran found out what President Trump means by peace through strength 1.
- A resolution directing the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran fails 213 to 214, with James voting no 5.
- The House passes another Iran war powers resolution with seven Republican votes, including Michigan's Tom Barrett; James casts his sixth no vote 16.
- James tells a virtual town hall the war must end quickly and says his position has not changed 3.
- At a Detroit debate, James says he called for the war to be over weeks ago 4.
