Pentagon calls questions about Jennifer Hegseth's consulting role 'ridiculous slander'
Disclosure records show the defense secretary's wife held a consulting role with a Republican-linked firm. The Pentagon says the couple follow all ethics laws, and no evidence shows she influenced Pentagon decisions.

The Pentagon is defending Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer Hegseth, after disclosure documents showed she held a consulting role with a Washington public relations firm called Watchtower. The records were published in late September 1.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told Newsweek both Hegseths are "in full compliance with all ethics laws and regulations." He added: "Any insinuations or claims otherwise are ridiculous slander." 1
What the records show, and what they don't
The filings say little. They do not show how much money Mrs. Hegseth earned from the role, if any, or whether she still works for the firm. Other spouse income listed on the form ranges from "None (or less than $200)" to "$5,001 - $15,000." 1
Watchtower was co-founded in early 2025 by Kevin McCarthy, the former Republican House speaker, and other Republicans. Unnamed sources told Politico in 2025 that defense contractor Lockheed Martin was among its clients 1. McCarthy told Politico he does not do any work for Lockheed 1.

Lockheed matters because nearly three-quarters of its 2025 sales came from the U.S. government, mostly the Defense Department. It is not clear whether Lockheed is a current Watchtower client 1. Newsweek could not verify the claim, and it said there is no evidence Mrs. Hegseth worked with Lockheed, advised Watchtower on defense matters or influenced Pentagon decisions 1.
A Watchtower spokesman said she "has not interfaced with any clients nor does she provide any advice to Watchtower on defense matters." He said she helped with "navigating conservative TV media." He did not say whether she still works for the firm 1.
A growing role at the Pentagon
Mrs. Hegseth is a former longtime Fox News producer. In August she was named chair of the President's Military Spouse Commission, an unpaid post advising President Donald Trump on military families 12.
She is reported to prepare her husband for media appearances, sit in on his interviews with reporters and help interview job candidates for his staff 1. The New York Times reported the Pentagon has not said whether she holds a security clearance 2.
Parnell has said the Pentagon plans to involve her "even more deeply in the future." 12 Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, said in March 2025 that her involvement was "not normal." 1
Secretary Hegseth has one of the highest levels of classification access. He can’t just hand that to his wife and say, 'Here, honey, hold my beer, and hold my classified information.'
What happens next
The questions arrive as Hegseth faces pressure from Democrats and, increasingly, some outspoken Republicans after Tuesday's midterm losses, which were largely seen as a verdict on the Iran war 1. Trump said he had received calls about Hegseth's future but intends to keep him. 1
On Thursday, Hegseth said in a video that he would "not back down." 1 The Pentagon says its ethics system includes financial disclosure reviews and screening to prevent conflicts of interest 1.
That matters because the public cannot tell from the records whether a firewall was needed. Parnell's statement says such firewalls exist, but it does not say whether one covers Mrs. Hegseth. The Pentagon did not provide a direct contact for her, Newsweek reported 1.
