Trump says loosening methane leak rules for oil and gas wells will cost less. The EPA's numbers show crude oil would drop about 0.14% in 2027, while the rollback would add millions of tons of smog-forming and toxic pollution through 2050.
The plan would relax leak rules for small oil and gas wells, end a program that flags big methane releases, and loosen limits on routine flaring. The White House said Trump would announce it Tuesday at a Texas rally for Ken Paxton. The administration promises $45 billion in savings, but those figures come only from the administration.
On Friday the Trump EPA said its rollbacks saved $1.6 trillion in a single year. Most of that total comes from repealing the car pollution rules, and fact-checkers say that figure counts what automakers avoid spending but leaves out what drivers will pay for gas and what everyone pays in health.
