Kentucky's open 6th District tightens as Democrat Dembo tests a Trump-friendly seat

Democrat Zach Dembo is competing for a Kentucky House seat Republicans have held for years. Raters still favor the GOP, but the race is an early read on whether Democratic gains reach red territory.

Kentucky's 6th Congressional District is an open seat, and it has become one of the Democrats' tests of whether they can compete in Trump-friendly places. Democrat Zach Dembo, a former federal prosecutor, faces Republican Ralph Alvarado, a former state senator. The seat is open because Republican Rep. Andy Barr chose to run for the Senate 2.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. The district is not a Democratic pickup on paper. Forecasters still lean Republican, but the race has moved toward Dembo 12.

How the race has shifted

In July, the Cook Political Report moved the race from "Solid Republican" to "Likely Republican." Both ratings still favor Alvarado 1.

Sabato's Crystal Ball, a University of Virginia political newsletter, moved the race from "Likely Republican" to "Leans Republican." That was reported October 7 2. Managing editor Kyle Kondik pointed to President Trump's declining popularity and to Barr's departure. He also noted that Barr won narrowly in 2018 2.

An August poll commissioned by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party's House campaign arm, found Dembo and Alvarado tied at 47% each among likely voters. It surveyed 474 people, and 6% were undecided 1. That was a party-paid internal poll, so readers should treat it with caution.

What each side says

Dembo says the race has moved because of his message 2. Alvarado's campaign took a sharper tone. Campaign manager Andy Westberry responded to the rating change with a jab at the Crystal Ball's record 2.

I still think the Republicans will hold on here, but it'll be an early sign as to what's going on.
Kyle Kondik, managing editor, Sabato's Crystal Ball2

Kondik still expects Republicans to hold the seat. He said the district's results come in quickly, so it could be an early sign of the national mood 2.

This race has moved in our direction because folks believe in our message.

Sabato's Crystal Ball also cited several references to Trump that were removed from Alvarado's campaign website. Alvarado called that a change in messaging and said he was proud of Trump's endorsement 2.

Why it matters

That matters because Democrats have mostly looked for House gains in swing suburbs. A close race in a seat Republicans have held since Barr first won it would suggest the party's gains reach further. Dembo has campaigned with Gov. Andy Beshear and former Rep. Ben Chandler, the last Democrat to hold the seat 1.

The caution is real. Public independent polling is scarce, and the one poll we found was a Democratic internal. Barr won the district with between 57% and 63% of the vote in each of the last three elections, according to Kentucky election data cited by Spectrum News 2.

What happens next is simple. Voters decide Tuesday. If Dembo wins or comes close, it would be one signal that Democrats are competing in territory that has favored Trump. If Alvarado wins comfortably, it would show the limits of that push.

The Record

  1. Cook Political Report moved the race from Solid Republican to Likely Republican 1.
  2. A DCCC internal poll reported by WUKY showed Dembo and Alvarado tied at 47% 1.
  3. Spectrum News reported that Sabato's Crystal Ball moved the race to Leans Republican 2.
