Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that the Trump administration did not help Flávio Bolsonaro leave Brazil after he lost his presidential race there, according to ABC News and The Seattle Times 12. Bolsonaro, a senator from Rio de Janeiro, arrived in Miami on Wednesday 12.
The State Department said a day before his arrival that Bolsonaro and his family would be granted U.S. visas, after his weekend loss to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva 12. Rubio spoke in Atlanta, where diplomats from the Group of 20 largest world economies were meeting 12.
We didn’t facilitate anything
We had word that he had arrived in the United States. He had previously held a visa, and the president made a decision to allow him to enter the country
Rubio said he had seen Brazil's foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday, and expected to see Brazilian officials again in France in November for a foreign ministers' meeting 12.
A disputed loss and an investigation at home
Bolsonaro has refused to concede and has called the elections fraudulent without providing evidence 12. He is under investigation in Brazil for corruption, money laundering and tax evasion, and had been ordered to surrender his passport after police deemed him a flight risk 12.

His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, also refused to acknowledge his 2022 loss to Lula and is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup 12. The younger Bolsonaro had President Donald Trump's tacit support in the race 12.
In a letter on Wednesday, the 45-year-old Bolsonaro declared himself the "true president-elect of Brazil," a term he later softened to "leader," and compared himself to Charles de Gaulle, who led the French resistance from London during World War II 12. On Friday he repeated on an Instagram livestream that he is a victim of persecution 12. He will lose his Senate seat when Brazil's new legislature begins on Feb. 1 12.
Why it matters
A foreign candidate who disputes his own country's vote is now in the United States on a visa, while the administration says it played no part in his travel 12. Rubio said the president made a decision to allow him to enter the country 1.
For readers, the practical effect is limited: the visa covers Bolsonaro and his family, and no U.S. benefit or rule change for the public is described in the wire reports 12. The midterm election is on Tuesday.
