Collins's Biddeford office vandalized with red paint hours before polls open
Red paint reading "blood on her hands" was splashed on the sidewalk and doors of Sen. Susan Collins's constituent service office in Biddeford, Maine, the second such incident in recent weeks. Collins, in a tight race for a sixth term, called it "disgraceful."

The Biddeford, Maine, constituent service office of Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) was vandalized with red paint overnight, hours before polls opened Tuesday for Election Day, according to police and the senator's campaign 12.
The Biddeford Police Department said it received a call reporting the vandalism outside Collins's office at 160 Main St. shortly before 11 p.m. Monday 2. Photos show the message "blood on her hands" written in paint on the sidewalk in front of the door, with a pool of red paint nearby and some splattered on the front doors 2.
It was the second time in recent weeks the office was targeted. In late September, a vulgar insult about Collins was spray-painted on the doors to the same Biddeford office 2. Collins later said in a radio interview that her home in Bangor had been egged about a week before that incident 2.
Biddeford is the town where Venezuelan migrant Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was shot and killed by an immigration officer earlier this year 1.

Collins, speaking with a CBS reporter in Maine, called the incident "disgraceful" 1.
Last night we once again had vandalism at my federal office in Biddeford. This office does constituent service work. This is not a political office. It’s always there, helping people with problems with Social Security or Veterans Benefits or the IRS.
Collins stressed that the Biddeford office handles constituent service work, not politics 1.
This is so unacceptable, and it’s unfair to my caseworkers who are working there. And fortunately, they refuse to be intimidated by this. And the office is open and doing business today.
Collins's chief of staff, Katie Brown, said in a statement that the act was meant to "intimidate the Senator and her staff" 1.
These tactics are disturbing, but not effective. Our staff is undeterred and on the job.
Collins is the only Republican senator from New England and is running against former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson 1. She is seeking a sixth term, something no senator from Maine has done before 2. Jackson was chosen as the Democratic nominee at a special convention on July 25, less than three weeks after primary winner Graham Platner dropped out following allegations of sexual assault 2.
Why it matters
The vandalism comes as Collins winds down a tight race to hold on to her seat 1. That matters because attacks on a Senate office in the final hours of a campaign put a spotlight on the pressure facing incumbent Republicans this midterm, and because the office that was targeted is the one constituents use for help with Social Security, veterans benefits and the IRS, not a campaign headquarters 1.
