Democrat Christina Hines was projected to defeat Republican Army veteran Mike Bouchard in Michigan's 10th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ), flipping a Republican-held seat in Detroit's suburbs 1.
Hines, a former prosecutor in Wayne and Washtenaw counties, will succeed Rep. John James (R-Mich.), who ran for governor this year with President Trump's endorsement instead of seeking a third term 1. The district covers much of southern Macomb County and part of Oakland County 1.
The seat had leaned Republican in recent presidential years: the district voted for Trump by 5 points in 2016, by 1 point in 2020 and by nearly 7 points in 2024, The Hill reported 1. But it also backed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) by double digits in 2022, when James narrowly won his first term 1.
James's departure removed Republicans' incumbency advantage. In August, Cook Political Report moved the race from lean Republican to toss-up, and as of Monday DDHQ rated it lean Democrat, giving Hines a 66 percent chance of winning 1.

Hines won a competitive Democratic primary this year by 17 points despite being outraised by two opponents, and Cook Political Report attributes her success in part to strong support in Macomb County 1. She focused her campaign on lowering costs, expanding access to affordable healthcare and fighting corruption, including by banning members of Congress from trading stocks, and sought to tie Bouchard to Trump, who endorsed him 1.
Bouchard, a former Army paratrooper and the son of longtime Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, focused his campaign on supporting domestic manufacturing and auto jobs in the district, securing the southern border and addressing inflation 1.
Part of a larger Democratic wave
The Michigan result came as Democrats won control of the U.S. House in addition to the U.S. Senate, a decisive rebuke of Republican governance in Washington, the Associated Press reported 2. The AP said the midterms channeled voters' frustrations over high prices, the Iran war and concerns over government corruption 2.
Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries said "the American people are crying out for transformational change" 2. Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer called the result a "generational remake of the Senate map" 2.
Trump sought to shift blame, posting before polls closed on the West Coast that he wasn't on the ballot and vowing to veto Democrat-controlled legislation 2. In a late-night phone interview with Fox News, he said voters "didn't like the candidates" 2.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune wrote on X that "Senate Republicans will not stand idly by as the far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party attempts to unwind everything we've done" 2.
That matters because Democratic control will profoundly reshape Trump's final two years in office and likely hamstring his agenda, with party leaders signaling investigations of top administration officials and deeper scrutiny of how he has enriched his family 2. Impeachment of Trump and his Cabinet officials is not off the table, the AP reported 2.
The AP described the result as a shockingly decisive rebuke and noted that Democrats won races across the map, from Texas to Iowa to New Hampshire 2.
