Houchin challenges McClain for House GOP conference chair after midterm losses

Rep. Erin Houchin of Indiana wants the House Republican messaging job held by Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan. The race shows how Republicans plan to regroup as a minority facing a Democratic House.

Rep. Erin Houchin, an Indiana Republican, is challenging Rep. Lisa McClain, a Michigan Republican, for chair of the House Republican Conference. The conference is the group of all House Republicans, and its chair leads the party's messaging. 1

The job will matter more next year. Republicans will be in the minority and will try to counter the Democratic agenda heading into 2028. 1

What each candidate says

Houchin sent fellow Republicans a "Dear Colleague" letter on Wednesday. She said the road back to the Republican majority runs through the party's message and its ability to communicate that message effectively. 1

She pointed to her background. Before Congress she ran her own public relations business, and she says she has spent more than 20 years in public relations, communications and campaigns. 1

McClain, the current chair, also wrote to colleagues. She called Tuesday's elections a "devastating setback" for House Republicans. 1

I will not minimize the magnitude of this defeat. While we’ve been knocked down, we are ready to get back in the fight

McClain said that if she is reelected, she would "take the fight to the Democrats, expose their radical agenda, and offer Americans an inspirational vision for the future under Republican leadership." 1

On the social platform X, McClain said 33 House Republicans had endorsed her. They include Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole of Oklahoma and Oversight Committee Chair James Comer of Kentucky. Two Republicans newly elected to Congress also back her. 1

A wider scramble

The chair race is one of several leadership contests. Roll Call reported that Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek the top Republican post in the minority. Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio are expected to compete for it. 2

Roll Call said the "real fight" would come at the whip and conference chair posts. Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota and Rep. August Pfluger of Texas are among those seeking the whip post. 2

Roll Call said Republicans will vote behind closed doors "next week." It did not give an exact date. 2

Why it matters

That matters because Democrats will hold the House and its subpoena power, which is the legal power to demand documents and testimony. Republicans must decide who will speak for them against that. 1

McClain's own letter shows how Republican leaders are reading Tuesday. She said she would not "minimize the magnitude of this defeat." The question now is whether a new messenger changes what Republicans say, or only how they say it. 1

The contest is among House Republicans only, so voters have no direct say. The outcome will still shape how the party answers Democrats in 2027 and 2028. 12
