Polls in Pennsylvania close at 8 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday, and three Republican congressmen are locked in tight races that will help decide which party controls the House next year 1.
Rep. Ryan Mackenzie is defending the 7th District against Democrat Bob Brooks. Rep. Rob Bresnahan faces Democrat Paige Cognetti in the 8th District. Rep. Scott Perry is running against Democrat Janelle Stelson in the 10th District 1.
NBC News lists those three, plus Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, among the Pennsylvania Republicans "looking to survive difficult challenges" 2. The Hill describes the three as "fighting for their political lives" 1.
There is also an open seat in Philadelphia. Democratic Rep. Dwight Evans chose to retire, and Democratic socialist Chris Rabb is the favorite to win the 3rd District 1.
Why Pennsylvania matters
Pennsylvania alone has multiple competitive districts in play on the same night 12. That makes the state an early read on whether the Democratic Party's national push is working.
The results will not be final at 8 p.m. The expected vote is an estimate that can change as county officials report and as more ballots are counted, according to NBC News 2.
The Hill directs readers to Decision Desk HQ's live results for the state's House races 1.
What to watch
Watch the 7th, 8th and 10th districts first. If Democrats win two or three of them, that is a strong signal for the party's national night. If Republicans hold, the majority fight likely runs through other states.
The 3rd District is a different kind of test. It is an open seat in a Democratic-leaning city, and the favorite is a democratic socialist, a label that will draw attention whatever the margin 1.
For readers, the practical stakes are the same as in every House race this year: which party sets the agenda on taxes, Medicare and Social Security, and which party holds the committee gavels when the new Congress is sworn in.
