Sen. Dan Sullivan's Alaska campaign and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the campaign arm for Senate Republicans, have organized a "recount fund." The Hill reported the move, citing a Tuesday filing with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) 1.
The Hill called it the latest sign that Republicans are prepared to contest the Alaska Senate result if anyone other than Sullivan wins 1. Sullivan, a Republican, is fighting a challenge from Democratic former Rep. Mary Peltola 1.
What the NRSC says
NRSC spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez said the committee is committed to ensuring every vote is counted fairly and accurately, in each and every state, and will be ready for all contingencies, including recounts, should they be necessary 1.

The filing does not say a recount is underway. This report does not describe any final tally in the race 1.

The backdrop: a second Dan Sullivan
Scrutiny of the race has grown even before results are counted. Last week The New York Times reported that a second Dan Sullivan on the ballot was recruited by operatives linked to national Democrats and Peltola's campaign 1.
Several investigations into that reported scheme are ongoing, including at the state and congressional level. The Hill notes the practice is not illegal under state law 1.
Peltola's campaign has denied involvement. In June, spokesperson Harry Child said the campaign had "no involvement with either Sullivan campaign" 2. The challenger, Daniel James Sullivan Jr. of Petersburg, told the Associated Press, "This is my choice" 2.
The NRSC had already filed an FEC complaint on June 9. It alleged that the challenger and an Alaska political consultant violated a federal ban on fraudulent misrepresentation of campaign authority 2. Those are allegations, not findings.
The legal fight so far
The Trump administration had already sought to dispute the results if the other Dan Sullivan caused the incumbent to lose, citing voter confusion 1. A federal judge on Sunday dismissed the Justice Department lawsuit that sought to block the results on those grounds 1.
What happens next
Alaska's count could take time, and Senate control may turn on close races. The fund is a sign Republicans are prepared to contest the results if anyone other than Sullivan wins 1.
That matters because the fund and the earlier Justice Department suit point the same way. Republicans are preparing to fight a result they may not like. The suit's dismissal, and NRSC spokesperson Joanna Rodriguez's statement that the committee wants every vote counted "fairly and accurately," are the public record to measure them against 1.
The Hill reports that the second-candidate scheme is under investigation, although it is not illegal under state law 1. Voters should expect both sides to keep lawyers close until Alaska's count is final.
The Record
- The NRSC filed an FEC complaint alleging the second Dan Sullivan's candidacy was a sham meant to help Peltola 2.
- A federal judge dismissed the Justice Department lawsuit seeking to block Alaska Senate results over voter confusion 1.
- An FEC filing showed Sullivan's campaign and the NRSC organized a recount fund 1.
