U.S. strikes Iran's Qeshm Island a day before midterms as peace talks continue
U.S. forces hit radar and missile sites on an Iranian island on Monday, while Qatar-led talks to end the war had no apparent breakthrough. Trump says the fighting is over. The strikes show it is not.

The U.S. military struck radar detectors and missile launchers on Iran's Qeshm Island on Monday, one day before the midterm elections, according to The Hill 1. The Wall Street Journal reported the strikes first 1. Mediators are still trying to get the two sides to agree to a peace deal 1.
A U.S. official told NewsNation, The Hill's sister network, that the attack was defensive. The official said it answered Iranian use of surface-to-air missiles against U.S. assets 1. U.S. Central Command, which oversees American forces in the Middle East, did not immediately respond to requests for comment 12.
What the island is
Qeshm sits in the Strait of Hormuz and is the biggest island in the Persian Gulf. It is home to a naval base and an underground missile site, and the U.S. has targeted it before 1. Explosions were reported around the island on Monday 2.
Citing U.S. officials, the Journal reported that the strikes aimed to stop Iranian forces from threatening commercial ships in the strait. It said the operations were largely unannounced 2. Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed it shot down three U.S. drones near the strait. The U.S. military had not confirmed that 2.

Trump's words and the talks
Trump told reporters on Monday that the U.S. had won a war with Iran. He said he did not know whether to call it a war, because there had been no fighting for months 1. The same day, U.S. forces hit targets on Iranian soil 12.
I don't know if you even call it a war because we haven't been doing any fighting for months.
Trump has said the Iran conflict will end soon after the midterms 1. He has also signaled that major combat operations are possible after November 1. Asked whether he planned to strike Iran after the elections, he answered "No," the Journal-based report said 2. U.S. officials told the Journal that Trump is still weighing more airstrikes, tougher sanctions and tighter trade limits 2.
Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, said Monday that "The ball is in the U.S. court." He said Iran's demands were stated clearly 1. Qatar, backed by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, is leading efforts to bring the two sides back to the table 1.
Central Command has prepared several strike options, including hitting Iranian infrastructure and military sites. They could be used if the White House authorizes them, The Hill previously reported 1. Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, warned that renewed U.S. attacks could bring retaliation beyond the Middle East 2.
Congress's role
Neither report describes any vote in Congress on Monday's strikes or on the options now being prepared 12. That matters because the Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war. Voters cast ballots Tuesday for all 435 House seats and a third of the Senate while the country is in a conflict that the president says is over.
What happens next is unclear. Trump has not committed to new strikes, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged him to authorize another round after the elections 2.
