Jesús García, speaking at a Democratic oversight hearing on Trump's attacks on the rule of law, says the administration admitted removing Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador was a mistake. A senior career DOJ official, Erez Reuveni, told the court there was no evidence Abrego Garcia was gang-affiliated. A judge then ruled his treatment shocking and illegal and ordered his return. García says Attorney General Bondi suspended Reuveni, and that after the Fourth Circuit refused to block the order, the DOJ asked the Supreme Court to step in.

Last week the administration admitted that its removal of Mr. Abrego Garcia was a mistake. And a hearing on Friday, a senior career DOJ official, Erez Ravini, expressed frustration that the Trump administration had taken these actions and produce no evidence that Mr. Abrego Garcia is gang -affiliated or that his removal was justified. The judge then ruled that the treatment of Mr. Garcia was shocking and illegal and ordered his return to the US. But instead of following the law, Attorney General Bondi suspended Mr. Reveni and after the Fourth Circuit refused to block the judge's order, the DOJ has now asked the Supreme Court to step in. And it will. Ruling has not been entered yet on the merit of the case. In the sea of authoritarian lawlessness, this case stands out.
