Moss leads Baker by wide margin in Michigan's 11th District, unofficial count shows
Democratic state Sen. Jeremy Moss was far ahead of Republican Ethan Baker in unofficial returns for the Oakland County seat Rep. Haley Stevens is leaving. Our fact desk could not find a formal race call in the coverage it could read.
Every quote in this story (1) was matched word for word against its source. How we work

Democrat Jeremy Moss held a large lead over Republican Ethan Baker in Michigan's 11th Congressional District in unofficial results posted on election night. Moss had 63,309 votes to Baker's 24,494 in the count Patch published Tuesday evening 1. The results are unofficial until they are certified 1.
Our fact desk could not load a news organization's formal call of the race, and the Patch page did not say what share of precincts had reported 1. So this brief reports the lead, not a declared winner. We will update it when a call or fuller count is available.
The numbers
Three minor candidates were also on the ballot. Anil Kumar had 652 votes, Ryan Teasdale had 520 and Farid Ishac had 465 1.
Moss led Baker by 38,815 votes in that count. By our own arithmetic, that is about 71% for Moss and about 27% for Baker. Those percentages are our calculation, not figures from the page 1.

An open seat in Oakland County
The seat is open because Rep. Haley Stevens gave it up to run for the U.S. Senate 2. The district covers Oakland County, including Auburn Hills, Ferndale, Pontiac, Royal Oak, Troy, West Bloomfield Township and Wixom 2.
Moss, a state senator, won the Democratic primary in August, according to CBS News projections 2. Baker is the mayor of Troy. He was the only Republican candidate left on the primary ballot after three others were disqualified or withdrew 2.
What each candidate says
Moss has named affordability and health care as top issues. He has also signaled support for dismantling and abolishing ICE, the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency 1.
Baker has talked about mental and physical health, cost of living, jobs, the economy and infrastructure 1. In his campaign announcement, he said those issues were too important to be handled through division alone 2.
need to be addressed now and are too important to be handled through division alone
What happens next
Election officials still have to finish counting ballots and certify the results. Until then, the figures can change. Control of the U.S. House depends on many races, and this is one of the contests being counted this week.
That matters because an open seat in a district like this is one Democrats had to defend as they try to take back Congress. A large lead on election night is a good sign for them, but a lead is not a certified result.
