Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) on Monday night rejected suggestions that her fiancé influenced her decision to endorse Republican Mike Rogers over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's Senate race, calling the claim 'sexism dressed up as political analysis' 1.

Stevens endorsed Rogers on the Sunday before Election Day, after attending a Detroit church service with him 1. The endorsement came days after her fiancé, Jason Turkish, told The Detroit News he would vote for Rogers and criticized El-Sayed's rhetoric about Israel 12.

In a post on X late Monday, Stevens addressed critics who suggested her fiancé or others must have made her decision for her, and argued that a woman can serve in Congress, run statewide, and fight for her convictions, and still be told that when she makes a choice people dislike, someone else must be pulling the strings 1.

Turkish, who is Jewish, told The Detroit News last week that El-Sayed used 'antisemitic language' on the campaign trail, saying: 'We have never seen a candidate for U.S. Senate act so recklessly toward the safety of Jews in the community as we have seen from Abdul' 2. He also told Jewish Insider that El-Sayed's refusal to say whether Israel or Iran was a bigger threat to the U.S. was '100 percent disqualifying to be a United States senator' 2.

Turkish is a longtime Michigan donor who has given to both Democratic and Republican candidates, according to Open Secrets, and he attended the University of Michigan alongside El-Sayed 2. He works as managing partner of Nyman Turkish PC, a law firm focused on accessibility and civil rights cases, and the Michigan Supreme Court appointed him to the state's Attorney Discipline Board until September 2027 2.

El-Sayed told The Washington Post that a super PAC ad tying grocery prices to U.S. military aid to Israel was not affiliated with his campaign and does not speak for him, but he has not outright condemned it 2. Stevens and Turkish had separately called on him to condemn the ad 2.

The dispute has divided Michigan Democrats in the final days of the race 2. Stevens lost to El-Sayed in August's Democratic primary, and the two announced their engagement after that loss 2.

That matters because the Michigan Senate race is one of the contests deciding Senate control, and a public fight between a sitting Democratic congresswoman and her party's nominee could affect turnout and party unity on Election Day 12.
