Boebert's lawyer cites 'unusual voting patterns' as she trails Democrat Laubacher
Rep. Lauren Boebert's campaign says it expects a recount in Colorado's 4th District, where Democrat Eileen Laubacher leads by under one point. The campaign has not said what is unusual about the votes.

An attorney for Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert's campaign says it is looking into "some very unusual voting patterns" as she trails Democrat Eileen Laubacher in Colorado's 4th District. The attorney, Scott Gessler, also said he expects the race to go to a recount. 1
With 97 percent of the vote counted, Laubacher has 48.75 percent to Boebert's 47.95 percent, according to The Associated Press. 1 That is a gap of 0.8 percentage points.
What the campaign said
Gessler gave his statement on Thursday. He said "a significant number of votes remain outstanding in the race" and that ballot returns since election night had been moving toward Boebert. 1
We are investigating some very unusual voting patterns and expect this election to head to a recount, one way or another.
The statement did not say what the patterns were or where they were found. 2 Newsweek said it emailed both campaigns for comment on Friday outside working hours. 1
Why a recount is not automatic
Colorado holds an automatic recount only when the gap between the top two candidates is very small. Colorado news anchor Kyle Clark put that cutoff at 921 votes, and another report put it at about 880. 32 Laubacher's lead has stayed well above either number. At its narrowest, it was 2,376 votes. 2
A campaign can still pay for a recount outside the automatic range, Clark noted. 3 That is the route Gessler's statement appears to point toward.
Where the remaining ballots are
Weld County, Boebert's strongest county, has finished counting. Its Republican clerk, Carly Koppes, said the remaining work there is limited to signature problems and ballots forwarded from other counties. Most of the ballots still outstanding are in counties Laubacher is carrying. 2
Voters who need to fix signature problems, and military and overseas voters, have until the end of Nov. 12. Counties are due to finish tabulating on Nov. 13. 2
What happens next
The Associated Press had not called the race as of Thursday afternoon. 2 The count will keep moving until those deadlines pass.
Boebert has been through a recount before. She won her old western Colorado district in 2022 by a margin so narrow it required a recount. She later moved to the more Republican 4th District. 2
That matters because this race tests how a losing candidate handles a count that is still open. Naming "unusual" patterns without giving details can raise doubt before any facts are on the table. Every legal vote is counted under Colorado's process, and the deadlines above will decide whether the gap narrows or holds. This is analysis, not a finding about the vote.
