Democrats weigh tariff fight as Trump's veto limits what a new Congress can do

After the midterms, Rep. Greg Stanton says Democrats will focus on lowering costs, and tariffs are on the list. A Reuters analysis found Democrats would still fall far short of the votes needed to override a Trump veto.

Rep. Greg Stanton, an Arizona Democrat, said on Thursday that Democrats will push to lower costs after the midterm elections, according to a NewsNation segment 1. Tariffs, which are taxes on imported goods, are expected to be part of that push. A NewsNation via Yahoo headline said Democrats' economic agenda is set to target health care, tariffs and Trump's allies 1.

We could not load the original report that quoted Stanton calling the coming tariff fight a 'donnybrook,' so we are not quoting him on that point. This brief relies on his record and on other reporting.

Stanton's record on tariffs

Stanton has led the House effort to end the emergency powers Trump used for many of his tariffs. The House voted 219-211 to end the tariffs Trump imposed on Canada. Six Republicans voted with nearly all Democrats 23.

The day before, Stanton had criticized a Republican move, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, to bar floor votes on the issue until after July 31 3. He said on the House floor:

Trump warned Republicans who broke with him that they would face consequences. He said they would "seriously suffer the consequences come election time, and that includes primaries!" 2

The veto problem

Trump could block any repeal bill that passes Congress; source 2 says he is likely to veto such measures if they reach his desk.

That matters because the main tool Democrats have is public pressure. Stanton's office cites a Tax Foundation analysis estimating that tariffs cost families an average of $1,000 over the past year 3. Whether Democrats can turn that figure into votes, and into Republican defections, is the open question.

The Record

  1. Stanton criticized a Republican move to block House votes on tariff emergency powers until after July 31 3.
  2. The House voted 219-211 to end Trump's tariffs on Canada, with six Republicans joining Democrats 2.
