Some House Democrats want Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan removed from their caucus. She endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate on Sunday, two days before Election Day 1. Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington said she supports removing her 1.
Stevens lost the August Democratic Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed by a narrow margin 2. She had endorsed El-Sayed days after that primary 2. She announced her switch in a video on X and said she is still a Democrat 1.
What the caucus rules say
The House Democratic Caucus is the group of all House Democrats. Its rules say a member must not take part in campaign activities for a non-Democrat in a partisan federal election in order to keep membership 1. Al Jazeera reports that formal discipline such as expulsion or censure is unlikely, though removal from the caucus is possible 1.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries' office did not respond to a request for comment, according to Al Jazeera 1. I could not confirm any formal vote or timeline for a removal.

The fallout in Michigan
Stevens said El-Sayed had told her she was no longer welcome in his campaign 2. A Democratic source told MS NOW that his campaign asked her to stay away from its events for the rest of the race 2. El-Sayed's statement said she "seems intent on relitigating a primary that ended three months ago." 2
Stevens told reporters she was "still a very proud Democrat" and added, "I'm sorry people are upset." 2 Her chief of staff of eight years, Justin German, said he and other staffers resigned over the endorsement 12.
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel wrote on X that Stevens is not a member of the state party now or in the future 2. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called the endorsement a "despicable betrayal." 2
is not a current member of the Michigan Democratic Party, nor will she be in the future
Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan said he was "extremely disappointed in Haley's decision" and would vote for El-Sayed 2. Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan said there was "simply too much at stake." 2

What happens next
Election Day is Tuesday, and Stevens leaves Congress in January 1. Al Jazeera notes that taking her out of the caucus would narrow the Republicans' current 218–214 House majority on paper, since she would no longer be counted as a Democratic vote 1.
Republicans have embraced her. President Trump said he would welcome her joining the Republican Party, and House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the endorsement as "courageous" 12.
That matters because the open Michigan seat, now held by retiring Sen. Gary Peters, could help decide control of the Senate 1. Whether the push to remove her goes beyond a few members is unclear tonight.
