Newsom predicts a Democratic 'blue tsunami' on Election Day
California Gov. Gavin Newsom told Jimmy Kimmel's audience a week before the midterms that Democrats will win big and that a large margin would make it harder for Trump to contest results. Newsom, who has said he is considering a 2028 run, called the Senate an open question.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, predicted a wave of Democratic wins in Tuesday's midterm elections. He spoke on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Wednesday, Oct. 28, about a week before Election Day 12.
"This is going to be a blue tsunami," Newsom said. He added, "I'm not asserting something that's not in evidence" 1. He also said, "We're going to see record turnout" 2.
This is going to be a blue tsunami.
What Newsom pointed to
Newsom cited early voting. "You're seeing all the early voting. It's off the chart," he said 1. He also said, "The energy's off the chart" 1.
He drew a line between the two chambers of Congress. Of the House of Representatives, he said it "is a fait accompli," meaning a done deal 1. He called the Senate an open question 2.

Newsom said that if Democrats win, Congress could change. "Finally, we'll reinstate a co-equal branch of government, not a supine Congress like we know it today," he said 1.
Warning about Trump and the results
Newsom accused President Donald Trump of efforts "to literally suppress the vote." He said Trump could then "express doubt in the electoral outcome" 1. Those are Newsom's characterizations. We did not find a response from the White House in the coverage we reviewed.
His answer, he said, is winning by a lot. "If we have a big enough margin in these races, he cannot contest those races," Newsom said 1.
If we have a big enough margin in these races, he cannot contest those races.
Newsom said California has volunteers, election attorneys and an Election Day voting hotline in place 2.
Why it matters
The prediction is a politician's forecast, not a result. Newsom has been saying this for months. In March, he told Kimmel that Trump would be "crushed, shellacked, in the midterms" 3.
That matters because Newsom is one of the Democrats' most visible voices, and he is setting a high bar. A smaller win than a "tsunami" could look like a letdown, even if it flips the House. The pattern is that both parties talk up their chances in the final week to push their own voters to the polls.
What happens next is simple. Polls close Tuesday, Nov. 3, and results will start coming in that night. Newsom's point about margin is a reminder that close races are the ones most likely to end up in court.
