Paxton drops Alamo rally as Texas Senate race with Talarico tightens
Ken Paxton's campaign has scrapped its planned Election Day eve rally at the Alamo, replacing it with stops hundreds of miles away. The change comes as recent polls show Democrat James Talarico with a slight lead in a race rated a toss-up.

Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton's campaign has dropped its planned Election Day eve rally at the Alamo in San Antonio, according to CBS News and The Texas Tribune 12. The campaign had announced last month that a two-week bus tour named "Come and Take It" would conclude Monday, Nov. 2, at the Alamo 1.
Instead, Paxton's Monday schedule lists events in Conroe and Allen, both hundreds of miles from San Antonio 1. CBS News reported the Allen event is set to start at 6:30 p.m. CT, which would not give him time to get to San Antonio that night 1. The Texas Tribune reported the Conroe event is set for 11 a.m. and the Allen event for 5:30 p.m. at a restaurant 300 miles from the Alamo 2. The two outlets give different start times for the Allen event.
The Paxton campaign did not respond to requests for comment 1. The Alamo Trust, which oversees the landmark, told Texas Public Radio on Friday that it was unaware of any plans for Paxton to host an event on the grounds, and the Alamo's rules generally prohibit political events there 2.
Paxton is running against Democrat James Talarico. Texas hasn't elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988, but recent polls have shown Talarico with a slight lead, and CBS News ranks the state as a toss-up 1. Paxton's final push has been dotted by other cancellations and reschedulings, including events in El Paso, Tyler, Texarkana and Mission, prompting Democrats to declare a "Paxton bus tour crashout" 2.

President Trump, who endorsed Paxton in the primary, has been campaigning heavily in Texas. He held a rally in San Antonio earlier in October and had events in Corpus Christi and Lubbock last week 1. Paxton has also appeared at several rallies in Texas headlined by Trump and Vice President JD Vance, in a bid to gin up enthusiasm among Republican voters 2.
Talarico has been crisscrossing the state on his own get-out-the-vote sprint, dubbed the "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts" tour in a nod to the television series "Friday Night Lights," which was inspired by a book about West Texas high school football 2.
Why it matters
The dropped Alamo rally comes late in a race that remains closely watched. That matters because the Senate is closely divided, and a Talarico win in Texas would be a major Democratic pickup in a state that has not sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1988 1.
