Eric Armstrong stopped campaigning on Sept. 7 for health reasons, but his name stayed on the ballot and he won an Iowa House seat by about 865 votes. His win shows how far down the ballot the Democratic wave reached.

An Iowa Democrat who ended his campaign for health reasons won his race for the state House anyway. Eric Armstrong, a retired railroad executive, beat Republican Keith Jones by about 9 percentage points, or around 865 votes, according to The Associated Press as reported by The Hill 1.
Armstrong won his race on Wednesday afternoon, after Tuesday's election 1. Raw Story, citing local outlet KJAN, put the count at 4,602 votes for Armstrong and 3,737 for Jones 2. The Daily Beast said Armstrong took 55.2% in a red-leaning district in Pottawattamie County 3.
Why he quit, and why it did not matter
On Sept. 7, Armstrong announced on Facebook that he was stepping away from the race, effective immediately, to address "some personal health issues" 1. He has not said what those issues are 3.
Because I must prioritize my health and recovery at this time, I am stepping down from my campaign, effective immediately.
Raw Story reported that most Iowa Democrats had expected to lose the seat after he dropped out 2. The reports we reviewed do not explain how his name stayed on the ballot 23.

Jones, the Republican, is a retired police lieutenant, the Daily Beast reported 3.
A seat left open by a Senate winner
Armstrong will fill the seat previously held by Josh Turek, a Democratic state lawmaker 1. Turek won the Iowa Senate race, and Democrat Rob Sand won the governor's race 1.
The Hill described the night as a "blue tsunami," a phrase Democrats have used 1. Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress and flipped state legislatures across the country 1. They also turned the governor's and Senate seats in Texas blue for the first time in decades, and won notable victories in red states such as Kansas, South Carolina and Florida 1.
What happens next
Armstrong told The New York Times on Wednesday morning that he would do his "best to represent" his district 1. He also said his health remains a concern 1. He did not respond to a Daily Beast request for comment 3.
But I still have health issues, that's what I'm struggling with.
The reports do not say whether Armstrong will take the oath of office or what the state would do if he could not serve 123. We will update this story when more is known.
That matters because a state House seat is where many decisions on local schools, property taxes and Medicaid are made. The pattern is clear: Democrats won a seat that, by most accounts, they had written off 2. Voters in that district chose the Democratic line on the ballot over the Republican 12.
