California State Sen. Scott Wiener is poised to win the San Francisco House seat held for decades by Rep. Nancy Pelosi, after San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan conceded Wednesday evening 12. Wiener leads Chan by about 11 points with 62 percent of votes reported, according to The Hill's partner Decision Desk HQ, which had not yet called the race 1.
The race in California's 11th Congressional District was expected to be close, and recent polling showed Wiener with a slight edge 1. Pelosi, who is retiring after nearly four decades in the House, endorsed Chan, while Wiener was backed by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, state Treasurer Fiona Ma and the San Francisco Chronicle 1.
Chan said in her concession statement that after reviewing the results and remaining ballots, while she expected the margin to narrow significantly, she did not have a clear path to victory 2. She congratulated Wiener and said she was "deeply grateful" to Pelosi "for her trust and for four decades of extraordinary service that have strengthened San Francisco and our country" 2.
Pelosi said Chan "brought courage, conviction and a deep love for San Francisco" to the campaign 2. She also congratulated Wiener, saying her office "stands ready to assist in the transition" 2.
Wiener, 56, has served in the California Senate since 2016 and previously on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors 12. He authored more than 100 bills that became law, with policies often focused on housing affordability, public transportation, LGBTQ rights and climate 1. He gained national attention for proposing some of the first safety regulations for artificial intelligence in 2024 1.
Wiener will be the first out LGBTQ+ person to represent San Francisco in the House 2. He thanked Chan for a "spirited and hard-fought campaign" and Pelosi, whom he called "the greatest Speaker in modern American history" 2.
He said San Franciscans voted for results and cited priorities including housing, health care, clean energy and public transit, as well as ensuring that the rule of law applies to everyone, the President included 2. He also said voters nationwide had delivered a powerful mandate for Democrats in Congress 2.
Pelosi, in a post on X, noted that when she came to Congress in 1987 there were only twelve Democratic women, and celebrated the election of more than 100 Democratic women to the House 2.
The Associated Press had not called the race as of late Wednesday 2. The result is a generational handoff in one of the country's most Democratic districts 12.
