House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, appears all but certain to become the first Black lawmaker elected speaker of the House. NPR reports that he helped deliver a decisive midterm victory for House Democrats 1.
The full House will vote for speaker when the new Congress convenes on Jan. 3 12. As speaker, Jeffries would be second in line to the presidency, after the vice president 1.
What Jeffries is promising
Speaking Tuesday night, Jeffries said Democrats must show voters results. "This is a change election, and we understand as House Democrats that we need to deliver dramatic change," he said 1.
Before the vote, he told The Associated Press that Democrats must do something "transformational about the affordability crisis." He also said he wants to "hold the crooks accountable" through oversight of the Trump administration 2. Democrats were preparing a 100-day agenda on lowering the cost of living and on oversight 2.

NPR says Jeffries has kept the focus on lowering costs for Americans 1. He has also been careful about impeaching President Trump again. In September he told ABC that Democrats "haven't ruled anything in and we haven't ruled anything out" 1.
A long climb
Jeffries has represented parts of Brooklyn in Congress since 2013 1. He was elected minority leader in 2022 and is the first Black politician to lead either party in the House or Senate 1. He rose as a top aide to former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat 1.
He would be the first Democratic speaker since Pelosi 2. Before the vote, AP described the current Republican majority under Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana as one of the smallest in modern times 2.
The challenges ahead
Holding the caucus together may be harder now that Democrats have promises to keep. NPR describes a House Democratic caucus that is diverse and often fractious 1. Jeffries will have to decide how to bring in, or sideline, a growing group of members aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America and the far left 1.
AP reported that he faces a new generation of progressive challengers, some backed by the Democratic Socialists of America. Rep. Greg Casar described Democrats as a "party of nervous lawyers" 2. Some inside the party also criticized Jeffries this year for a private meeting with Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law. Jeffries later said he took the meeting at Kushner's request to discuss affordability, and that Democrats intend to hold the administration accountable 1.
Jeffries has worked with Trump's circle before. In the first Trump administration he led the push for the bipartisan First Step Act, which cut sentences for some drug crimes. That work meant partnering with Kushner 1.
That matters because the new majority will be judged on prices and oversight, not on who holds the gavel. The pattern in House fights is that a narrow majority lives or dies on keeping its own members together. The first test is the Jan. 3 floor vote.
This is a change election, and we understand as House Democrats that we need to deliver dramatic change,
AP noted that Democrats already forced votes this Congress that GOP leaders tried to avoid, including on the Epstein files and on halting the Iran war 2. With the majority, they will decide what reaches the floor.
