Climate activist William Lawrence unseats GOP Rep. Tom Barrett in Michigan's 7th
Democrat William Lawrence, a Sunrise Movement co-founder, beat one-term Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in a Lansing-area toss-up, part of the Democratic wave that has now won control of the House and Senate.

Democrats are projected to win Michigan's 7th Congressional District, with William Lawrence, a liberal climate activist, defeating one-term Republican Rep. Tom Barrett, according to Decision Desk HQ 1. With more than 95 percent of the vote counted Wednesday morning, Lawrence had about 51 percent to Barrett's about 48 percent 1.
The district includes Lansing, the state capital 1. Both sides spent heavily on a race that was a true toss-up heading into the polls, making it one of the most expensive contests of the 2026 cycle 1.
A political newcomer with a national profile
Lawrence is new to elected office but not to Washington politics: he is a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, a group formed to push policymakers to get tougher on climate change 1. He defeated two centrist Democrats in the August primary 1. He left the Democratic Socialists of America, or DSA, just weeks before that primary win 1.
Republicans argued Lawrence was too far left for the purple district and sought to highlight his DSA history 1. Lawrence said he let his DSA membership lapse before the primary to make clear to voters in his district that he would represent them 2.

After the primary, old social media posts came under scrutiny, including a deleted December 2021 post directed at former Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin 2. Lawrence distanced himself from past posts, including one in which he called to defund the police, saying they no longer aligned with his current beliefs 2.
Affordability and data centers
Lawrence focused his campaign on affordability, including efforts to shore up Social Security, bring down the cost of housing and establish a system of universal healthcare 1. He also vowed to end the conflict in Iran and to install a yearlong, national moratorium on the construction of new data centers 1.
Barrett also campaigned on data center regulations, though he did not go as far as Lawrence in calling for a federal moratorium, saying instead the decision should be made at the local level 2. Barrett, an Army veteran who served in Iraq, was first elected in 2024 and flipped the Lansing-area district red 12. He was one of the first House Republicans to break with President Trump and vote on war powers resolutions to end the war with Iran without congressional approval, but he campaigned with Trump this summer and had his endorsement 2.
The result came in a cycle when, The Hill reported, President Trump's historic unpopularity, the Iran war and widespread economic anxieties have been a drag on GOP candidates across the country 1. Nationally, Democrats have won control of the House in addition to the Senate, according to The Associated Press 3.
That matters because Lawrence's win adds one more progressive voice to a Democratic caucus whose leaders will face the challenge of balancing rabble-rousing progressives with centrists 1. The pattern is that candidates who ran on cost-of-living relief and against data centers are arriving in Washington just as their party takes the gavels.
