Jay Rockefeller, who served as West Virginia's governor and then spent 30 years in the U.S. Senate, has died at 89. ABC News, citing the AP, called him the last member of his family's political dynasty, and the only Democrat, to serve as the state's governor and senator 1.
He died Thursday night at his home in Washington, according to Mary Stewart, a vice president at WETA, the public broadcasting station where his wife, Sharon, is president and chief executive 1. Another local outlet reported the death as Friday 3. The cause was not disclosed 3.
From a rich family to a poor state
Rockefeller was born John D. Rockefeller IV in New York City on June 18, 1937 12. His great-grandfather founded Standard Oil, and his uncle David Rockefeller ran Chase Manhattan Bank 1. Two other uncles, Winthrop and Nelson, were Republican governors of Arkansas and New York 1.
He arrived in West Virginia in 1964 as a worker in an anti-poverty program, Volunteers in Service to America, known as VISTA 1. He lived in the mining community of Emmons 1. He broke with his family's Republican tradition and was elected to the state House of Delegates as a Democrat in 1966 1.

He served as governor from 1977 to 1985 and as U.S. senator from 1985 to 2015 12.
It explains every policy I pursued and every vote I have cast. It was where my beliefs were bolted down, and where my passions met my principles,
He said he left the Senate with no regrets, saying at his 2015 retirement that he "could not imagine a more rewarding career" 1.
Health care and coal miners
WCHS-TV reported that Rockefeller played a key role in preserving health benefits for retired coal miners. The United Mine Workers union named him an honorary member in 1995 3.
The station also said he spent decades pushing to widen access to health care. That included support for President Bill Clinton's failed 1990s plan and for President Barack Obama's health overhaul in the 2000s 3.
Tributes from Republicans
Republicans who now hold West Virginia's top offices paid tribute. Gov. Patrick Morrisey said the state "has lost a man who devoted much of his life to serving our state and its people" 2. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito called Rockefeller "a true gentleman" who treated her with respect 23.
He was always a true gentleman who treated me with respect, kindness, and encouragement.
Rockefeller is survived by his wife, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, four children and nine grandchildren 3.
Funeral arrangements were not included in the reports reviewed for this brief. We will update this story when the family announces them.
That matters beyond West Virginia. Rockefeller's career ran from the anti-poverty programs of the 1960s through the health care fights of the Clinton and Obama years. Many of today's debates over Medicaid, miners' benefits and who gets covered are still being fought on that ground.
