Elon Musk set a record for election spending this year, putting at least $446 million into Republican-aligned super PACs and groups, The Guardian reported 1. That topped his own 2024 spending of nearly $290 million 1. A super PAC is an outside committee that can raise unlimited sums to support or oppose candidates.
The return was poor. Democrats won every one of the five Senate races where Musk's America Pac spent the most backing Republicans 1. Those races were in Texas, Michigan, Maine, Ohio and Iowa 1.
Newsweek, citing an analysis of federal filings, put his giving at $445.6 million through October 14, the latest date for which contribution data was available 2. That figure includes money from United States of America Inc., a nonprofit group he controls 2. Other tallies put the total at $474 million, and no donor has ever spent more in a single cycle 2.
Texas was the biggest bet
The race Musk spent most heavily on was the Texas Senate contest between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico 12. America Pac spent at least $28 million on anti-Talarico ad buys and messaging alone 1. Newsweek reported Musk put more than $200 million into the contest, the largest single investment of his midterm push 2.

Talarico won, becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate race in Texas since 1988, Newsweek reported 2. In his victory speech he referenced Musk 1.
We just proved that all the money in the world is no match for the people of Texas
Musk was unusually quiet on election night 1. On Wednesday he wrote on X, the social media platform he owns: "guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time." 2
Where the money went
Musk's money flowed into at least eight Republican-aligned super PACs 1. His own America Pac received at least $216 million 12. The Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC supporting Senate Republicans, received $168 million 12. The Congressional Leadership Fund, the main super PAC backing House Republicans, received $30 million 2.
The 20 largest donors put roughly $2 billion into federal races this cycle, and Musk gave nearly three times as much as the next closest donor 2. Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein ranked second at $150 million 2. The top Democratic-aligned donors were Majority Forward at $104 million and George and Alexander Soros at $103.4 million 2.
What happens next
Musk will soon face a House, Senate and Texas government filled with Democrats who have vowed to take a tougher stance on tech and to scrutinize his operations 1. House Democrats have called for investigations into his conduct while he led the so-called "department of government efficiency" last year and have vowed to scrutinize federal funding for his companies 1. Incoming Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa has called for a datacenter moratorium and has been in a legal battle to gain access to unredacted emails between Governor Greg Abbott's office and Musk 1.
That matters because the spending did not buy the result, but it did help create several of the most expensive races in U.S. history and set a potential precedent for spending in the 2028 presidential election 1. The pattern is that the biggest check of the cycle went to the side that lost both chambers.
