Vance said the Iran war had clear goals. Now he blames it for the loss
In March, Vice President JD Vance told Fox News the war with Iran would not become another Iraq. The day after Republicans lost the House and Senate, he blamed the same war for the defeat, while President Trump says he would do it all again.
Every quote in this story (4) was matched word for word against its source. How we work

On Wednesday, the day after Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate, Vice President JD Vance posted a long statement on X. It gave a blunt verdict on why Republicans lost: "The reason we lost is the war." 13
He meant the U.S. war with Iran. President Donald Trump launched it together with Israel on Feb. 28 8. Reuters called Vance's post a break with Trump's war, coming after a painful rebuke at the polls 3.
Days into the war, Vance said something very different. He went on Fox News and said this conflict would avoid the mistakes of Iraq and Afghanistan because the president's goals were clear 410.
What's so different about this, Jesse, is that the president has clearly defined what he wants to accomplish.
What he said then
On the eve of the first strikes, Vance said there was "no chance" the United States would get pulled into a long Middle East war like Iraq, the Associated Press reported 10.

In his Fox News interview on "Jesse Watters Primetime," Vance compared the new war with Afghanistan, which he described as "20 years of mission creep," and with Iraq, where "we were still in that country for nearly a decade." 4 He said the president knows the United States has "much greater capacity to inflict damage on the Iranian nuclear program," and added: "We could go a lot longer." 4
In April, after the two sides announced a temporary two-week ceasefire, Vance flew to Pakistan to lead peace talks 8. "If they're gonna try and play us, then they're gonna find that the negotiating team is not that receptive," he said before he left 8. Reuters reports that the April ceasefire never became a peace deal. The fighting stalled, and Iran has threatened ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for the world's oil 3.
Even this Monday, Nov. 2, the day U.S. forces reportedly struck Iran's Qeshm Island, Vance told CNN that "The president and I both feel really good about the prospect of potentially coming to a negotiated settlement." 9 ABC News reports that Vance publicly backed the war and criticized people who attacked the president over it 6.
There were early hints of distance. In March, Trump said Vance was "philosophically a little bit different than me" on Iran and "maybe less enthusiastic about going." Trump also said, "We get along very well on this." 10
What he says now
Vance's post Wednesday dared anyone who still defends the war to say so out loud 16.
If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so.
Vance wrote that the main problem was not low Republican turnout. Instead, many people who voted for the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 voted for Democrats this year 6. He said voters wanted Republicans to end the war, deal with the cost of living and inflation, and put America first 12. He also said a pollster had told him the party's economic message was not sharp enough in the final stretch of the campaign 5.
Voters had signaled their unhappiness for months. Before the election, CNBC reported that polls showed only 31% of Americans supported the military action 9. In ABC News's report on voter surveys, 34% of House voters called the war crucial to their vote, compared with 49% who said that about the cost of living and 55% who said it about government corruption 6.
The president is not backing down
Trump called Vance's view "largely true," saying the war drove up gasoline prices in the short term 6. He also said he would make the same choice again 6.
If I had it to do again, I'd have to do it again because long term, it's the only answer
"I can tell you that, as far as that war is concerned, I would have done nothing differently," Trump said 6. Reuters reports that Trump was recently briefed by Adm. Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, on options for restarting combat 3. Last month, Trump had said the United States would not attack Iran before the midterms 9.
Democrats point to the power of the purse
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Wednesday that his party plans to stop paying for the war once it takes over next year 7. Schumer invoked the power of the purse, the Constitution's grant of control over federal spending to Congress 7.
We are going to end the war
"We already have some Republicans who have joined us in ending the war," Schumer added 7.
The pattern
That matters because Vance was not watching from the sidelines. He was the administration's public voice on the war's goals in March and its lead negotiator in April 48. Now that the bill has come due at the ballot box, he is describing the war as someone else's cost to defend.
The timing is worth noting too. Fox News reports that Vance has not decided whether to run for president in 2028 and plans to weigh it after the midterms 2. Reuters reports that some observers see Wednesday's post as the start of that campaign 3. Whatever his reasons, his own words from March are on tape.
