Schumer: Democratic Senate win is a 'generational remake' and 'relief is on the way'

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters in Washington on Wednesday that the Democratic sweep that won his party control of the House and Senate amounts to a "generational remake of the Senate map" 12.
Democrats now hold a 54-seat Senate majority, counting the two independents who caucus with the party, according to NPR. Two races remain uncalled: Alaska and Mississippi 1.
The wins included red states that President Trump carried, among them Iowa, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas, and a Kansas victory that NPR reported is the state's first Democratic Senate win in 94 years 1.
Schumer, who is poised to become majority leader in January, said the candidates deserved the credit because they "knew how to tailor their message to the states" 1.

He said Democrats intend to bring down the cost of living, end the Iran war and investigate the White House over allegations of corruption 1. The Hill reported that Senate control gives Democrats new power to call administration officials to hearings and a bigger say over administration and judicial nominations 3.
Trump has said he will use his veto on Democratic priorities but has also signaled openness to deals with the new Congress, according to NPR 1. Schumer said Democrats will push ahead regardless.
We are going to work hard to drive costs down with the president or without him.
What happens next
Schumer is expected to be elected majority leader when Senate Democrats hold leadership elections in early December, The Hill reported, though some senators-elect, including Juliana Stratton of Illinois, have threatened not to support him 3. Senate Republicans are expected to elect John Thune of South Dakota as minority leader at their leadership election next week 3.
Before then, Thune must decide whether to spend the lame-duck session confirming as many Trump nominees as possible or working on a budget reconciliation package to fund the Defense Department over Democratic objections 3.
The pattern is that a Senate majority without the White House can block and investigate but cannot pass bills alone. The Hill noted Democrats will still need Trump's signature to turn their bills into law 3.
That matters because the affordability promises Schumer made Wednesday — on costs, the war and oversight — depend on negotiations with a president who has promised vetoes, even as he has signaled he might deal 13.
