Trump says 'Norway sucks' at Michigan rally after losing Nobel Peace Prize bid

At a Michigan rally on Sunday, President Trump again attacked Norway over the Nobel Peace Prize, which went to South African jurist Navi Pillay. Norway's government does not pick the winner, and the midterm election is eight days away.

President Trump told a Michigan campaign rally on Sunday that Norway "sucks." He was complaining again that he did not win the Nobel Peace Prize. 1

"Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a s***house country, actually," Trump said, according to Newsweek. He added: "I don't want anything to do with Norway." 1

Trump said he had told his wife he would get the prize within two weeks. He described the winner as a woman nobody had ever heard of. 1 That was South African jurist Navanethem Pillay, known as Navi, 85, a former United Nations human rights chief. The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored her for efforts to promote peace and international law. 1

Norway's government does not choose the winner

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. It is an independent five-member body whose members are appointed by Norway's parliament. The Norwegian government does not select the winner. 1

Erik Aasheim, head of communications at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told Newsweek on Monday: "The Nobel Committee is entirely independent of the Norwegian government." 1 Newsweek said it also asked the White House and the Norwegian Embassy in Washington for comment. 1

A repeat of earlier complaints

This is not the first time. At a Syracuse, New York, rally on Oct. 9, the day the prize was announced, Trump called Pillay a mystery person. 12 He also said the decision was a lasting stain on the country of Norway. 2

The next morning he posted on Truth Social, his social media site, that he "did not get the Noble Peace Prize. WOW!" He misspelled Nobel. 1

In January, Trump wrote to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that he "no longer feel[s] an obligation to think purely of Peace." The letter came as Trump pushed to acquire Greenland and threatened tariffs, which are taxes on imports, against U.S. allies including Norway. 1 Støre replied that the prize "is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government." 1

Why it matters

That matters because the president is attacking a U.S. ally over a decision it did not make. Trump has also said he is working to settle the wars involving Iran and Russia-Ukraine. 1 Allies watch how he talks about them.

The Nobel is not the only honor in the story. FIFA, soccer's world governing body, said this month that a committee would review its new Peace Prize and the decision to give Trump the first one. 1

At an Iowa rally on Thursday, Republican House candidate Joe Mitchell gave Trump a framed "Man of the Century" award that Mitchell said he had created because Trump had not received the Nobel. 1

What happens next is not clear. Newsweek's account does not say whether the White House responded. The midterm election is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
